  • UO DIY The Best New Year's Party Decorations
    blog.urbanoutfitters.com
Instead of going out this year for New Year's Eve, why not throw a festive party at home? We're ready to embrace a more lowkey attitude this year, and think hanging out with friends while kicking back on the couch sounds more appealing than ever. For the big NYE celebration this year, we decided to try out some decoration DIYs, to help make our own living rooms as festive as any club. Both easy, we think they'll add a fun, glittery vibe to whatever kind of party you decide to throw. See below for our tutorials for a simple glitter banner and NYE party poppers! NYE Banner: Needed: -glitter paper (enough for whatever phrase you'd like to spell!) -brown paper -scissors -twine -hole punch -marker -gluestick -thumbtacks (for hanging) 1. Decide how big you'd like your banner to be and what you'd like it to say, and trace whatever size circles you're comfortable with onto the back of your glitter paper. You need one circle for each letter of your word, so plan carefully. (This is probably the most time-consuming part of the whole project, so don't worry.) Once all circles are traced on, simply cut them out. 2. Once your glitter circles are cut out, do the same with your brown paper, but make the circles a little bit smaller so they can fit inside the glitter circles you've cut. Again, it can be any size, but make sure to trace something so they're all the same size (we used a cup). 3. Once everything is all cut out, glue the brown paper down to the glitter paper and write out your message. We went simple and just used a Sharpie, but feel free to do this part any way you wish. 4. Once everything is glued down and written out, you can start stringing up your circles onto the twine. Punch two holes in each side of your circle so you're able to thread the twine through. This looks better than simply taping on the circles and will ensure they all hang more evenly. 5. Once all your letters are strung up, you can hang your banner wherever you want! We taped a couple down to make sure that they lay flush to the wall, but if this is hanging in a doorway, it's super easy to pop up. DIY Party Poppers: Needed: - push pop containers -metallic paper -glitter -scissors -tissue paper -gold spray paint -spray glue 1. For these push pop confetti blasters, first you'll need to shred a whole bunch of confetti. (You can buy it pre-made if you're in a time crunch, but we think it's more fun to make your own.) We simply did it all by hand, cutting up some metallic paper into small shreds. We also used a hole punch to create some different-sized confetti. 2. To make the push pop containers look a little more appealing, spray a fine coat of glitter spray paint on the handle. We didn't bother doing the full container, because later on you'll need to cover up the outside with tissue paper anyway. Make sure you let this dry before continuing! 3. Once you've made all the confetti you need and have let any spray paint dry, you can start stuffing the push pop containers with your mixture. The more densely packed it is, the more explosive the 'pop' will be. (Which is obviously what everyone wants for NYE!) 4. Once your popper is stuffed with confetti, you're going to want to cover the top of it with a small piece of tissue paper. You can simply tape the edge of the tissue paper to the side of the push pop to keep it in place, because for the next step, you're going to roll the outside of the push pop in whatever paper you choose to cover the tissue paper. The outside covering can be secured by glue or a piece of tape, whichever you prefer. 5. Completed poppers! Once midnight hits, just pop up the bottom and your confetti will fly out the top.
