  • Photo Diary London Calling
    lookbook.nu
Fashionable, vibrant and multicultural, London is widely known as a top destination for art, music, culture and quite simply – one of the most beautiful cities to live in. With a burgeoning underground scene, birthing the likes of Banksy, Queen and Pink Floyd, the land of cultural icons and ancient-modern juxtaposition is more than ideal for photographers, musicians and artists of all kinds to reside, explore and in good time, establish themselves. It’s no surprise then that globetrotting lookbooker Laura Allard-Fleischl, who has shot for clients like Nasty Gal (visit her portfolio and blog), locked in a one-way from New Zealand 8 months ago to call this bustling metropolis her new home. She’s already taken a decent lay of the land and is thrilled to share with us her personal photo diary of favorite hangs and haunts on a laid back London day. “As a freelance photographer I tend to have a lot of spare time on my hands in between projects and enjoy spending that time hunting for hidden gems amongst the boroughs. When Lookbook approached me, I jumped at the chance to share my top spots with other keen adventurers.” 10:00 AM | British Breakfast & Bao Buns click the image above to view the gallery I like to start of the most leisurely of days (Saturday!) with a big breakfast. Broadway markets, a kaleidoscope community of tastes and cultures, has an incredible selection of edible treats, particularly the Bao Buns stall. Their selection of mini, steamed creations are complex and divine. I like to nibble on them on my way to London Fields before dozing off any leftover Friday night libations. Alternatively, a full English made from fresh, local ingredients at the market stalls can make for a hearty and comforting breakfast in bed. 1:00 PM | Picking English Bouquets click the image above to view the gallery If I’m not working on a shoot or editing photos, I’ll head down Hackney Road to the oasis of foliage of flowers that is the Columbia Road Flower Markets to pick fresh booms for the house. You can find everything from bedding plants to 10-foot banana trees here, some from sellers’ backyards, others imported from across the world. 1:30 PM | Swanky Vintage Finds click the image above to view the gallery I’m a massive vintage fan, and Retromania is my all-time favorite vintage shop in the city. Deemed the ‘Creative Hotspot’ for London Art Students, it’s reputed as a premier destination for fashion stylists and avid collectors of retro clothing. Not only is it affordable, but it’s stocked to the brim with designer pieces and special finds that feature unique, intricate beading. 3:00 PM | Onward to Oxford click the image above to view the gallery If I’m more in a high street mood, I’ll hit up Oh My Love, freshly carried by Topshop’s mega store on Oxford Street. The label derives its inspiration from East London surroundings and the latest street style of cool, free-spirited girls across the globe -- essentially dominating the lacy jumpsuit game. I also love to pick my way through beautifully curated stores like 39 39 on Kingsland Road, a co-operative lifestyle and retail concept that functions as a showroom and gallery for emerging artists. For a tress refresher, my favorite salon in the city is Glasshouse. Part of the creative community at Netil Housem, the stylists here keep locks looking haute and healthy by working entirely with organic products. (P.S. if it’s a Thursday, the antique markets at Spitalfields are a lovely option for a walk home. The stalls are jammed full of antique trinkets, various curiosities and other bits ‘n’ bobs’ - as the locals say it!) 5:00 PM | Time for a “Knees up” click the image above to view the gallery Sundays provide the best dinner option with Brick Lane markets, open until around 5:30. With shifting ethnic patterns, the surrounding Shoreditch area is a foci of London’s edgy and artistic crowd. Once the food begins to clear, you can browse the treasure cove of vintage clothing and old cameras for sale in the stalls. But the real fun begins after dinner at places like Schacklewell Arms, Ridley Roa
