Their iconic Eames Lounge Chair (1956) began with a desire to create a chair with “the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.” In continuous production since its introduction in 1956, the Eames Lounge Chair is widely considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century. Pairing soft, inviting leather with the sleek form of molded wood, this set was the culmination of the Eameses’ efforts to create a club chair using the molded plywood technology that they pioneered in the ’40s. Entirely hand-assembled out of parts that are fully replaceable by Herman Miller, the timeless Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is constructed to last lifetimes.     Charles and Ray Eames believed “design is a method of action,” and they continually updated their work as newbecame available. “The chair that Charles and Ray were designing,” explains grandson Eames Demetrios, “is the chair that’s made tomorrow.” The duo originally designed their molded chair in metal and entered it as a prototype in MoMA’s 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, then refashioned it in light yet strong fiberglass just two years later. In the 1980s, after determining fiberglass production was detrimental to the environment, Herman Miller ceased production to explore more sustainable options, eventually choosing recyclable polypropylene. The company never quite forgot about fiberglass, however, and it recently began researching greener production methods. The Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair (1950) is the end result, constructed using a cleaner process but true to the original with its beloved variegated surface. This reintroduced version comes in a range of reformulated semi-gloss color pigments that faithfully reproduce the vintage ones. Its deep seat pocket and waterfall edge keep you comfortable by reducing pressure on the backs of your thighs. The seat back is left unfinished to maintain a slightly rough natural texture for easier gripping with your hands. This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. True to the original pieces in structure and, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. Charles and Ray Eames received a commission to design the interiors of three lobbies in the new Time & Life Building at Rockefeller Center in New York City. In addition to outfitting these spaces, this major project encompassed the development of the comfortably upholstered Lobby Chairs and a group of stools made out of solid walnut. Inspired by an African stool that stood in the living room of the Eames House, the lathe-turned Eames Stools (1960), which were also conceived by Ray to be used as small occasional tables, have distinctive individual profiles. Each Vitra miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet.

To achieve this design, the Eameses had to figure out how to create the shape and strength they desired, while keeping manufacturing costs low. The answer turned out to be the use of a lighter-gauge wire forming the rim of the chair and doubled for strength, which won the Eameses their first American mechanical patent for a design, and resulted in the Wire Chair (1951). How those lucky executives were able to get an Eames chair designed just for them began with the Time-Life Chairman, Henry Luce. In 1959, Charles Eames asked Luce for photographs from the Time-Life archive to be used in a slideshow he was creating for the U.S. pavilion at the Moscow World Exhibition. Luce agreed, as long as Eames promised to return the favor one day. In 1960, Eames made good on that promise, and 50 years later, the world is still enjoying the results of that arrangement.
