On Thursday, April 18, 2013, the comic book world and a few folks in the real world marked the 75th anniversary of the birth of Superman.
The alter ego of Clark Kent was born in the imagination of two teenage boys in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. In fact, I now live in the house previously owned by the ex-wife and son of one of the creators.
Clark Kent/Superman embodies a lot of ideals that are just as valuable today as they were when the original concept for the character was developed. An ethical superhero who never killed the bad guy, who fought for truth and justice--not vengeance.
A stranger in our world. Different. Faster and stronger than any one else on the planet, yet he chooses to use that power for good and the betterment of others.
Of the classic superheroes, I think I would actually pick Superman as my favorite, and so I thought I'd create an ensemble honoring my No. 1.
...Although, to be fair, Spiderman and Batman are tied for second. I mean, a photographer and a billionaire philanthropist crime fighter...what's not to love about their origin stories.
So, without further adieu -- happy 75th birthday, Superman. You haven't aged a day...not really.
