Design Norman Cherner, 1958. Laminated molded plywood, chrome steel base & arms. Made by The Cherner Chair Company. The new Cherner Task chair combines molded plywood and steel in a dramatic yet minimal design for the work environment. The spidery swivel base and curvaceous molded shell highlight the structural capabilities of the two materials. It is a further development of the classic molded plywood Cherner Chair. A strong, lightweight and graceful addition to the home or office, the Cherner task chair is available with or without armrests in all Cherner finishes and upholstery options. The Cherner Chair is still regarded as one of the most dramatic designs utilizing the technology of molding plywood. Like the 1958 original, the Cherner chairs utilize a molded plywood seat with a unique construction of laminated plywood in graduated thickness. The seat and back are designed using a single shell connected by a slim and sturdy throat with slender metal legs. Each chair is manufactured from the original drawings, molds and specifications by Cherner Chair, a Cherner family company headed by the designer's sons. The "walnut stained walnut" option has a walnut seat that has been covered with a walnut finish, which give the core and walnut veneer a uniform appearance. The "walnut-clear stain" option has a walnut seat and has been covered with a clear finish, which emphasizes the contrast between the exposed beech core and walnut face veneer. 24.5" W | 21" d | 30.5"-35" h | seat: 15.5"-19" h | arm: 25.25"-29.75" h.

Although a pioneer in prefab housing, Norman Cherner is best known for his molded plywood seating line he created for – and ultimately sued – the manufacturer, Plycraft. After telling Cherner that his design for what is now known as the Cherner® Chair (1958) had been scrapped, Plycraft's owner continued to produce it, claiming himself as the designer. The Chair's popularity soared when it appeared in Norman Rockwell's 1961 painting "The Artist at Work" on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. Cherner sued, and while Plycraft agreed to pay Cherner royalties, the line was out of production by the early 1970s. In 1999, Cherner's sons formed the Cherner Chair Company to revive the designs and produce them as their father originally intended. The Cherner Task Chair represents an evolution of the Cherner line – his sons produced the chair from their father's initial sketches and prototypes. The Freedom Chair is designed to fit almost all body types. The seat depth is adjustable to properly support the seat and thighs, while the adjustable back support helps keep the lumbar region of the body in line. Often, ergonomic chairs are likely to be improperly positioned, resulting in the creation of more problems than they solve. The Freedom Chair is simpler than other chairs, eliminating many manual adjustments and creating instead a system of internal mechanisms that respond to the user's needs. A unique counterbalancing tilt mechanism self-adjusts according to the user's weight and movement, thus eliminating the need for manual fixes. In addition, the chair and seatback can be easily raised or lowered, and the seat itself moves forward or back. Any adjustments can be easily made while the user is seated for accurate positioning. Because of a natural lift-and-release action, the armrests are effortlessly repositioned in tandem depending on the task at hand. The seat cushion provides excellent shock absorption and weight distribution for unmatched comfort. Made in U.S.A.
