  • Florence Knoll 2 Position Credenza
    hivemodern.com
Design Florence Knoll, 1961. Steel frame, wood veneer body with wood veneer or marble top. Made in USA by Knoll. Like so many of her groundbreaking designs that became the gold standard for the industry, the 1961 executive collection, including the series of credenzas, made there way into the pantheon of modern classics. Florence Knoll's designs are reserved and cool, severe and angular, reflecting the objective perfectionism of the early 1960s. While a student on the campus of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Florence Knoll Bassett became a protegée of Eero Saarinen. She worked briefly for Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Wallace K. Harrison. In 1946, she married Hans Knoll, after which they formed Knoll Associates. As a pioneer of the Knoll Planning Unit, she revolutionized interior space planning with her belief in "total design" - embracing all aspects of design principles which were radical departures from the standard practice in the 1950s, but were quickly adopted and remain widely used today. For her extraordinary contributions to architecture and design, Florence Knoll was accorded the National Endowment for the Arts' prestigious 2002 National Medal of Arts. 2 position credenza: 37.5" w | 18" d | 25.5" h. These elegant credenzas are offered in your choice of wood veneer on the sides & back panel, and a choice of either wood or marble tops. All the credenzas have polished aluminum pulls and a 3/4" thick top. Wood tops are finished with a transparent polyurethane coating. The base is available in either a polished or satin chrome finish. This credenza features four box drawers (each with one removable partition), and one full extension file drawer with two metal bars for file hanging. The Florence Knoll credenzas are also available with other finish options and in various configurations. Please call for details.

  • Saarinen Tulip Dining Table By Knoll
    2modern.com
Eero Saarinen did not, in fact, invent the pedestal table, but we might be forgiven for thinking he did. The Saatinen Tulip Dining Table was a revolutionary design, in part, because it stood in such stark contrast to the standard pedestal table designed before Saarinen's Tulip collection for Knoll entered the design scene in 1957. “The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs,” he told Time magazine in 1956. And so he did, with a base said to be inspired by "a drop of high viscosity liquid." Intrigued by the possibilities in emerging technologies like molded plywood and fiberglass, Saarinen, a Finn, was also predisposed to the Nordic design sensibilities of simplicity and rationality. Half a century later, it's that clarity of vision that elevates Saarinen Tulip Table from merely beautiful to full-fledged classic. Features: The Eero Saarinen Collection. Designed by Eero Saarinen 1957. Tabletop features beveled edge. Top attaches to base with threaded rod. Tabletops available in a wide range of laminates, woods, marbles and granites. Base is heavy molded cast aluminum available with white, black or platinum paint. GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified. Veneer Tops: Tops are constructed of veneered medium density fiberboard with a cathedral grain pattern in various clear or toned stains. Oval dining tops are 11/4" thick. Edges are 1/4" solid wood to match face veneer. Marble and Laminate Tops: Bevel-edged satin smooth laminate or marble. 3/4" thick coated marble tops have transparent polyester coating to help eliminate use-associated stains. 3/4" thick natural marble tops and granite tops have protective sealer. Laminate tops are 1.06" thick. Base: Heavy molded cast aluminum, strap-polished. Black and white bases are coated in a tough, abrasion-resistant Rilsan finish. Platinum bases consist of a highly resilient polyurethane enamel wet coat with a clear satin finish. Note :This product is available in more colors and finishes.

  • Artek Kiki Lounge Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Ilmari Tapiovaara, 1960. Lacquered steel frame, PU foam & dacron, upholstery. Made in Finland by Artek. Tapiovaara wanted to design inexpensive furniture for a broader audience. He made use of materials that were readily available in Finland in the 1940s, such as solid birch. Later in the 1950s, he began to develop multipurpose chairs made of steel tubing and plywood. Ilmari Tapiovaara designed Kiki in 1960. It was originally conceived as a chair whose stackability allowed it to be used to seat large groups, such as in auditoriums. In the Kiki series Tapiovaara employed a more clean cut design idiom instead of the more organic style he had favored previously. Instead of wood, he chose oval steel tubing as the structural and unifying element of the whole Kiki collection. Kiki was a success, establishing the current direction for furniture design at this time. Kiki's timeless and elegant design idiom has made it one of the most popular pieces of public furniture in Finland. llmari Tapiovaara was one of the greatest interior architects and designers of his era. With the mind of an explorer and a soul of a craftsman, Tapiovaara was always seeking for new solutions to improve everyday objects. During his long career Tapiovaara created dozens of iconic objects loved by the public. He was revered as a master of characteristic and human objects and surroundings who captured the essence of Finnish identity. Ilmari Tapiovaara was awarded a total of six gold medals at the Milan Triennials as well as many other important awards throughout his career. 23.6" w | 29.5" d | 26.7" h | seat: 15.4" h.
