  • Jasper Morrison Alfi High-Back Chair
    dwr.com
Born in England, Jasper Morrison was raised in both Germany and the United States before his family settled in London, where he attended Kingston College School of Art & Design and the Royal College of Art. Morrison is a self-described conceptual designer, taking familiar shapes and repurposing them into fresh ones. Believing that what you don’t see is as important as what you do see, he designed and engineered Alfi (2015) to be an ordinary chair with extraordinary invisible qualities. Its seat is made from reclaimed post-industrial waste, and its base is made of responsibly harvested wood handcrafted by Amish woodworkers. Adding even more extra to its extraordinariness, Morrison shaped the seat as a nod to cane chairs seen at sidewalk cafés found throughout Paris. The result is simple and simply beautiful, and one he’s pleased with: “It’s one of the most comfortable chairs I have designed.” Made in U.S.A.

More generous proportions and luxurious cushions for modern day comfort, and a sophisticated black finish.
  • Xavier Pauchard Tolix® Marais A Chair
    dwr.com
Metalworker Xavier Pauchard not only brought the art of galvanizing steel to France but also took the process to the next level by creating the Marais A Chair (1934). The quintessential cafe chair, it was both elegant and robust enough to grace the decks of the S.S. Normandie ocean liner. It takes 100 manual operations to create a Tolix chair, and 80 years after the company was founded, the Tolix name is recognized worldwide as best-in-class furniture. “Xavier Pauchard’s Chaise A is a perfect synthesis created by a man possessed of an understanding of raw, and the tools used to work them,” said Serge Lemoine, former director of Musee d’Orsay, Paris. All Tolix furniture is still made in Autun, the same Burgundy town where the company first began. Slight surface abrasions and markings are characteristic of the material and part of its hardworking machine aesthetic. Stackable up to 10 high. Made in France. Tolix products are protected by copyright, making it illegal for another company to clone this chair. At DWR, the Tolix products we sell are 100% authentic. The Marais Collection should be protected from moisture and kept indoors when not in use to maintain its finish. To see more of our top pinned items, click here.

  • Josef Hoffmann Hoffmann Armchair
    dwr.com
Josef Hoffmann is well known for the simple, restrained, yet visually interesting dining chairs – several intended for cafés – that he designed early in the 20th century. The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement can be seen in his work, but Hoffmann also embraced the industrial age. Rather than rejecting traditional decoration, he succeeded in making it serve structural principles, which he believed should determine the forms of buildings, interiors and objects. Whether admiring one of his chairs or the Sanatorium Purkersdorf he designed in 1903, you can see Hoffmann’s emphasis on straight, unadorned lines, characteristics that are in keeping with the style of the Viennese Secession. The Hoffmann Armchair (1925), designed in collaboration with Josef Frank, is made at the bentwood factory founded by Michael Thonet in 1861. Made in the Czech Republic.

Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple, organic form, the graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong Era Chair with Cane (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the back of the chair and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet, who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making, eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. The Era Chair with Cane is suitable for residential and commercial use and remains a staple in cafes and restaurants around the globe. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Made in the Czech Republic.

  • Ettore Sottsass Nine-0 Stacking Armchair
    dwr.com
Presenting the Nine-0 Collection by Ettore Sottsass. The designer, who helped found the Memphis Group and created the iconic Olivetti Valentine typewriter, finished his seating collection for Emeco shortly before his death on December 31, 2007. The name “Nine-0” refers to the age Sottsass was when he designed the collection, which is handcrafted in Pennsylvania using the same 77-step process that Emeco first developed for its 1006 Navy® Chair. Sottsass was one of the first designers to use the 1006 Navy in residential applications, and the Nine-0 is his reinterpretation of that classic chair. The Nine-0, like all Emeco seating, it is crafted of 80% recycled aluminum and has an estimated lifespan of 150 years. Stacks up to six high. Nine-0 chairs and stools contribute to LEED™ credit #4.2 Recycled Content (and credit #5.1 if shipped within 500 miles of Hanover, Pennsylvania). Made in U.S.A.

  • Mater Shell Lounge Chair - Black Leather, Soaped Oak
    shophorne.com
The Shell Chair is developed out of Michael Dreebens ongoing interest in traditional craft practices in North India - in this case saddle making. Exquisitely made saddles have been produced in India for centuries, and although some horse culture persists, it's waning as India becomes more technologically developed. The Shell Chairs attempt to incentivize this skilled trade by providing these artisans with a new market for their craft, and hopefully encouraging them to pass it on to younger generations. The shape of the chair is an homage to Scandinavian design of the mid-twentieth century and embraces some of its core values: it's clean of line and is intended to emphasize the leather forming and stitching, it's deeply comfortable, and it's durable – like the saddles it's derived from, it's crafted from thick, top-grain leather, and with reasonable care, will last for decades. Frame: Soaped Oak. Leather: Black leather.

  • Milo Baughman 1188 Chair in Leather
    dwr.com
The 1188 Chair (1968) was Milo Baughman’s favorite chair and the one with which he chose to furnish the home of business partner and friend Thayer Coggin. Given that the Coggin family could’ve had any dining chair in the company’s inventory, the 1188 is something special indeed. Baughman and Coggin met in 1953 and formed a powerful partnership that lasted for five decades. The North Carolina-based company is still the exclusive manufacturer of Baughman furniture to this day. The designer’s work was included in High Styles: Twentieth Century American Design at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1985. Baughman was inducted into the Furniture Design Hall of Fame in 1987. Made in U.S.A. Natural leather is prized for its unique markings. Scars, scrapes and wrinkles are not defects. For the Ivory/Bronze chair, the bronze finish is created by hand and is not uniform. This is intentional, and the marks of the craftsman are left on the chair to add warmth and character to each piece.

For those who wish to relax in high style, this lounge chair provides an exceptional back rest. Much like a beautiful woman, the chair has slim legs, an hourglass waist and a fan shaped back. Norman Cherner first designed this chair in 1958. It made such a splash in the design scene that it showed up on a 1961 Saturday Evening Post cover illustration by Norman Rockwell. In 2002, Benjamin Cherner redesigned this latest version. His main concern was keeping the curves of the chair while making it visually light. The Cherner Lounge Chair with Arms features a seat molded from a single piece of plywood, and a wood base made from two pieces of laminated beech. Face veneer Cherner Lounge finishes are available in Classic Walnut, Natural Walnut, Classic Ebony or Red Gum. Available in a wide range of fabrics or leathers. shophorne.com
The Haringe series of teak furniture is refined elegance for indoors, outdoors or anything in between. The sophistication of the series makes it ideal for around the swimming pool, in the game room or just about anywhere. The teak slats are framed with either stainless steel or black stainless steel. The cushions are given a sophisticated touch through the use of buttons and decorative stitching so they are not waterproof but the beauty is still undeniable. The cushions are available in either a weather durable Sunbrella fabric or in imitation leather with loose patches sewn together by hand and buttons added along the seams. The leather cushions are for indoor use only. The series has an armchair, lounge chair, sofa, and cocktail tables in 2 sizes as well as 3 sizes of a dining table. As with all teak furniture, to maintain the original luster the teak requires to be oiled once or twice a year. If left untreated the wood will develop a silvery gray patina which is equally beautiful.
