(Rating: 5 stars) I watched this film last week immediately after I had finished my last final for summer term, and to be honest I wasn’t expecting much (does anyone expect much from movies that are available for streaming online?). I chose it because I love Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, and I assumed it would be entertaining and somewhat mindless. I was not, however, expecting to adore it. The film follows Beatrix Potter, the author/illustrator of children’s books such as the tales of Peter Rabbit and Squirrel Nutkin. I have a soft spot for Potter’s book since I grew up watching the animated films, so right from the beginning I was completely drawn in. The film begins with Potter getting her first book deal, despite her parents’ (and many others’) doubts and disapproval. Throughout the film Potter publishes a quite a few more children’s stories, falls for her editor, Norman Warne, and becomes a strong, independent woman along the way. It’s so rewarding to watch her go from a sad, somewhat antisocial spinster to a capable, successful authoress. The interesting thing about Beatrix Potter is that, even though she was a sheltered, secluded single woman who lived with her parents until she was nearly forty, she was a rebel in her own way. She lived in a time where the publishing market still wasn’t easily accessible for women, and she was born into a family that clung to the outdated class system and Victorian ideas of propriety. I love her story and the way she found the courage to reject the expectations of society. The best part of this film, though, is the acting. Zellweger is absolutely charming and just the right amount of crazy as Beatrix Potter and McGregor is hilariously awkward as Norman Warne. For most of the film I just sat and smiled at the screen as I watched them interact. Also, much of it is filmed in the Lake District (one of the most beautiful places in the entire world), and the filmmakers added the rather genius touch of making Potter’s animal sketches come to life as she talks to them. Overall, I absolutely loved it, even though it didn’t turn out to be the mindless entertainment I was looking for. I think all aspiring writers appreciate a good success story, but more than that, I was drawn to the underlying message that a woman can be single and happy (Sometimes I feel like our society is still stuck in the “dark ages” where single women past a certain age are called “spinsters” while men are simply referred to as “bachelors.” How is that fair?). If you’re looking for a charming, heartwarming story that will probably make you cry (you’ve been warned) this one is highly recommended. Also, it’s the perfect family movie since I can’t think of a single thing that would be offensive (but there’s always that one person that gets offended no matter what, just look at all the complaints about the ALS bucket challenge). Watch the trailer here. Purchase the film here. (currently available for streaming on amazon prime) (Reviewed by Jennifer)
