It is believed polka dots first became a prominent pattern on clothing in the late 1800s in the United Kingdom. Polka dots got their name from the dance of the same name. The dance was very popular at the time the pattern became fashionable on clothing.
I recall Nana had the most beautiful polka dot dress with huge black dots on a form fitted white dress worn with a big black patent leather belt that was one of my favourites when I was young. It seems the polka dots will be with us for quite some time -- perhaps timeless.
