  • About a Girl Katie Shell
    More info
Residing in a small town on the coast of Spain, Katie Shell is a short trip from the beach or the mountains and gets the best of both worlds. (Color us jealous.) We tagged along with Katie on a trip to the beach and the market and found out what she loves most about her bohemian lifestyle. Above: Lomography Lomo Instant Sanremo Edition Camera Hi Katie! Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do! I'm a fashion blogger, dance teacher, wanderer, and adventurist. What's it like living where you do? It's the most chill place on earth, filled with sunshine, warm weather (we only have one month of winter here), and happy people. Everyone knows everyone. It's a safe, calm, and close-knit environment to live in. We don't even have a police station here! It seems like you get the best of both worlds (mountains and ocean)? Yup! I live in a sub-tropical beach town on the south of Spain's coastline. It's actually a bay. We grow all our own tropical fruit; you can literally walk around picking avocados, lemons, oranges, sugar apples, figs and bananas off the trees! And just an hour away we have a ski station (Sierra Nevada). Crazy! Do you have any favorite beaches that you like to visit? What makes them so special? I've been to some pretty magical beaches. They are all special in their own way. I love to go on hikes with my boyfriend and stumble upon secret tiny beaches! It's the best feeling to work up a sweat after a long hike, go for a swim and then take a beach nap before heading home. If you have a weekend to head out of town, where do you like to go? Every Sunday I head to the flea market which is the next town on from me. I'm always on the lookout for antiques (especially driftwood furniture), plant pots and vintage clothing. When you're heading to the beach for the day, what do you make sure to pack in your bag? I always have an extra bikini with me (normally my Urban Outfitters black triangle bikini top and a pair of basic black bottoms, just in case!), one of my vintage towels, a book (currently I'm reading The Giver), a bottle of water, and watermelon. It's the best thing to eat in the hot weather... so refreshing! [I also like to bring] my Bali Body tanning oil and my Urban Outfitters Polaroid camera... aaah, I love it so much! Any beauty items that are a must-have for you currently? COCONUT OIL! I swear by it! I use it on my hair, skin and teeth. I even make my own toothpaste with coconut oil. All you need is baking soda and peppermint oil for a nice, minty taste. It makes your teeth far whiter than any teeth whitening product full of nasty ingredients. What about fashion? What are some of your go-to pieces currently? Favorite outfit? I adore vintage clothing. I love that I'm wearing something that has a history that was once worn by someone else. I always have a bikini with me, too, either on or in my bag. Living by the beach means your day will very likely involve water! I'm also obsessed with denim right now. I love wearing these cute denim cheeky shorts that I got from UO. Make us a beachy playlist with 5 songs you have been recently loving. I keep on playing 'The Less I Know the Better' by Tame impala at the moment! It's such a catchy tune and it reminds me of summer time. Add in 'Sunny Afternoon' by The Kinks, 'Pleasurekraft' by Tarantula, 'Alter Ego' by Tame impala, and 'Sun Down' by Tricky ft. Tirzah. What are some of your goals for 2016? Take up boxing, visit Morocco, and perfect my Spanish. I'm pretty good but I want to be able to speak it fluently. Finally, what's one thing you'd like people to know about you that they might not realize? I attended one of the most prestigious performing art schools in London, 'Italia Conti', where I trained as a triple threat performer. I specialized in singing! Shop Katie's Picks

  • UO DIY Decorating with Instax
    More info
This holiday, deck the halls with your favorite friends and memories. See our DIY tutorials on decorating with Instax film, so the season can be as personalized as possible. If you're dying to get your hands on your very own Instax camera, then you're in luck! We're throwing a contest with Fujifilm and one winner will get (drumroll, please): a $500 UO gift card, one Instax Smartphone Printer and two boxes of Instax Mini Film. Everything you need to get your instant photo DIY dreams off the ground. If you'd like to enter, you must follow Urban Outfitters on Instagram and post an image to your account showing how you decorate using photographs. (U.S. residents only, please!) Make sure to include the hashtags #UOInstaxagram and #UOContest in the caption field or your entry won't be counted! Contest runs from 11/16-12/14, so get snapping! For more details click here. Instax Place Settings For a completely personalized place setting, use Instax photos of your friends as their place settings. If you have the Instax printer, you can print these out ahead of time, but it's also fun to set up a photoshoot station at your next party and snap your guests on their way in. This gives your table a cute personalized touch and also gives your guest a fun memory of the night to take home. Instax Tree If your apartment or dorm doesn't have the space for a regular, real tree, then one that hangs on the wall is the next best thing. For this DIY, we used the Instax printer to print out a photo of a pine tree. While it may look complicated, it's actually pretty simple (just time consuming). All you need to do is find a photo of a tree you like and then manually crop it into Instax-able sized portions. This one took a lot of Instax film, but using a smaller template means less photos. If you don't have the patience for cropping, another fun (and personal!) way to make a wall tree is by arranging photos you already have into the shape of a tree. Simply outline a triangle on your wall and fit your photos in wherever you'd like. The easiest way to hang them up is with double-sided tape: easy to apply, easy to remove, and generally leaves walls mark-free. To ramp up the Christmas spirit, hang string lights around your final product. Insta-tree! Instax-inspired String Lights For a more personal touch on classic string lights, we hung up Instax photos of our favorite moments to help make them stand out a little more. For this DIY, all you need are a couple sets of string lights (we used these), an assortment of photos, and mini clothespins. To hang the string lights, we wrapped the wire around nails, but if you're unable to put so many deep holes in your walls thumbtacks work just as well and leave less of a mark. Once your string lights are hung up, all you need to do is hang your photos where you want them. It's that easy! This is easy to do in the bedroom or living, and gives your room that cozy glow that makes the holidays feel that much more magical.
