Canto 33.31: FEASTING ON DANTE’S IMAGINATION & SEARCHING FOR ITS SOURCES.
Dante: Another Katzenjammer Kids spanking? Have you no conception of the seriousness of Hell’s punishment?
Me: Well [defensively], I could not leave the inferno without paying homage to Bronzino’s [c. 1530] marvelous portrait of you—and the comic provides a bit of visual noise. You know, I wanted to make the set look contemporary.
Dante: Have you no shame?
His mouth raised up above his savage meal,
That sinner wiped his lips upon the hair
Of the head that he had chewed on from behind.
