  • Florence Knoll Bassett Florence Knoll Two-Seater Sofa in Volo Leather
    dwr.com
Florence Knoll Bassett took a holistic view of interior space planning. As director of the Knoll Planning Unit in the 1950s, her "total design" approach embraced everything about a space – including the furniture. She modestly referred to her furniture designs as the "meat and potatoes" of an interior, yet to this day they hold the same iconic American appeal as that most basic and functional of meals. Her Lounge Collection (1954) has the simple, architectural lines and unparalleled construction of all modern classics. This Two-Seater Sofa is manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Lounge Collection includes the Lounge Chair, Two-Seater Sofa and Sofa. Built to last a lifetime with a solid wood inner frame, polished chrome outer frame, no-sag seat suspension and Spinneybeck® leather. KnollStudio logo and Florence Knoll's signature are stamped into base of frame. Seat and back covering is fully welted and tufted. Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified® for low-emitting products.

  • Oscar 3 Seat Sofa by Matthew Hilton
    shophorne.com
The Oscar sofa strikes a pleasing balance between modernity and tradition, large in size yet light in appearance. The sofa is made from a European hardwood frame, jute webbing and hessian straps and then covered with a mix of materials that includes natural fibers, animal hair and wool. It features two large feather cushions that are notable for their depth, the back has a line of sewn in pulls, lending the sofa the appearance of a buttoned back, without the actual buttons. The feet are made from walnut stained beech, with the front ones being turned versions. By contrasting long straight lines with delicate natural curves, Mathew Hilton has created a piece that is both reserved and full of humility. The Oscar armchair is a piece perfect for those who like their modernity laced with a little familiarity. Made in the UK. Couch is shown here in dark grey Molly 170, Wool. Other fabrics available upon request.
  • Normann Copenhagen Era Sofa
    shophorne.com
The small sofa is once again highly relevant after several years dominated by larger sofas. Its simple design, with tight-fitted upholstery and wooden legs originated back in the blossoming functionalism of the 1930s and '40s, as a rebellion against the bulky, Victorian style of the time. Today, there is a growing need for more flexible furnishings - in public as well as private spaces. Many factors, including less space, many different activities and a need to be online have affected our way of being together. This has created a need for personal space for the individual within the room. The practical size of the Era sofa allows it to easily accommodate furnishing needs in both large and small homes. This is combined with an incredibly strong construction that makes it well-suited for public spaces. Priced in Gabriel Breeze Fusion fabric. Other fabrics available.
  • Stephen Kenn Encounter Leather Sofa - Brown Leather & Antique Brass
    shophorne.com
Los Angeles based designer Stephen Kenn has long been inspired by clean and simple design aesthetics and the stories inherent in vintage military fabrics. In 2011 he combined those two loves by creating The Inheritance Collection. The collection was the result of an exploration of how furniture is constructed, and then a desire to distill the process down to the barest bones. Likening the process of furniture construction to the way the human body is constructed, the frame, belts, and cushions became the bones, muscles, and skin of each piece. A special sofa made from soft vegetable tanned leather. The back side of the leather is stained olive green, and the belts are olive green webbing with antique brass buckles. This piece is slightly taller and shallower than the usual Stephen Kenn sofadesign, but has the same lasting durability as everything they make.
  • Irving Harper and George Nelson Vitra Miniatures Collection: Marshmallow Sofa
    dwr.com
Each handmade Vitra miniature is a classic in the history of furniture design reduced in size at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. If only all design "failures" were so successful. The inspiration for the Nelson Marshmallow Sofa (1956) was launched when an inventor approached George Nelson and Irving Harper with a planned "self-skinned" injection plastic disc that would be inexpensive to produce and unerringly durable. As the proposed cushions had a maximum diameter of 12", the designers perched 18 of them atop a steel frame. Sadly, the inventor's vision for high-resiliency, low-cost cushions never came to fruition, but the design was so compelling that Herman Miller chose to produce it anyway. The atom-like appearance of the Marshmallow Sofa is a precursor to the aesthetic style of the pop art of the 1960s. Each Vitra miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet.

  • Finn Juhl Baker Sofa in Fabric A

The Baker Sofa was created in 1951, the year that Juhl brought international recognition to Danish design with his U.S. debut in the "Good Design" exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York. This was also the year when he was the architect appointed to represent Denmark in creating the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Oh, and did we mention he had just turned 39? In looking at his Baker Sofa, we can see how Juhl was influenced by modern sculpture, like the moving mobiles created by Alexander Calder. Another recognizable Juhl characteristic is how one element appears suspended over another, with a space in between. In doing this with the back of this sofa, he gave the Baker a surprising visual lightness for a sofa of this size. (Imagine how different it would look as one solid piece.) This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Onecollection, House of Finn Juhl™. Made in Denmark.

  • Charles and Ray Eames Eames® Sofa Compact

The inspiration for the Eames Sofa Compact (1954) derived from a built-in sofa Charles and Ray Eames designed in the late 1940s for their home in Pacific Palisades, California. They liked that sofa so much they decided to develop a freestanding version built on an airy pedestal of chromed-steel legs. With modern lines and a trim profile, this sofa not only fits comfortably in small spaces but also holds its own in large rooms, making it a versatile choice for home or office with ample seating for three people. This Daybed (2004) was designed “to be seen in the round,” says Craig Bassam, by which he means that it can be seen and used from all sides. Such an approach isn’t surprising from a design team living in a glass house where furniture is visible from every angle, whether you’re standing inside or out. The house is the work of Philip Johnson, the architect who designed the Glass House for his own private residence in New Canaan, Connecticut. To see how seamlessly this Daybed (and all the furniture BassamFellows has created) works in a space designed by the iconic Johnson, makes it very clear that these are the next icons – destined to become highly collectible. Bassam is an architect whose career started with Bruce Eeles, a disciple of Marcel Breuer. His partner, Scott Fellows is a Harvard MBA who transformed the Swiss firm Bally. Together they are BassamFellows, described as “the design world’s A-team” by The Times of London. This fully handcrafted Daybed is made of solid American black walnut that is sustainably and locally harvested. The leather cushions are hand stitched with inverted seams; the backrest adjusts to three positions. Made in U.S.A.
