  • Stephen Kenn Inheritance Sofa - Black Wool & Brass

Los Angeles based designer Stephen Kenn has long been inspired by clean and simple design aesthetics and the stories inherent in vintage military fabrics. In 2011 he combined those two loves by creating The Inheritance Collection. The collection was the result of an exploration of how furniture is constructed, and then a desire to distill the process down to the barest bones. Likening the process of furniture construction to the way the human body is constructed, the frame, belts, and cushions became the bones, muscles, and skin of each piece. Soft black wool cushion covers, black webbing with black leather belts, on a light brass plated frame.

  • Normann Copenhagen Ace Sofa
    shophorne.com
Flat-packed upholstered lounge furniture sounds like a crazy idea. Hans Hornemann considered it a requirement that the function did not involve any compromise with the design. Ace is constructed from molded plywood, covered with molded foam for the highest possible comfort. The back is flexible, which gives it a springy feeling, ensuring great sitting comfort. In order to reach the goal of this ambitious project, Normann Copenhagen has specially developed production tools, brackets, screws, legs and fabrics. Ace compellingly conquers a room with its relaxed, yet stylish, attitude. Ace is delivered in two attractive fabrics, a vibrant velour and a flecked wool textile, as well as soft, exclusive leather. The woolen textile, “Nist”, has been developed in-house by Normann Copenhagen to complete the characteristic visual style. Nist is manufactured using an untraditional weaving technique and contains 52 percent linen, which produces an attractive natural flecking of the fabric. The velour brings Ace a seductive elegance, while Nist gives the chair a more stringent, masculine look. Ace has legs in stained beech, in the same color tones as the fabrics for a uniform expression. The stain allows the wood’s natural flame patterns to shine through and adds a discrete play to the monochrome color universe consisting of five inviting shades. In addition to the Ace lounge chair, the Ace collection includes a sofa, a dining table chair and a footstool. Legs: Stained Beech (for Textile), Painted Oak (for Black Leather) or Lacquered Oak (for Brandy Leather). Nist Fabric Colors ( 52 % Flax, 45 % Virgin Wool 3 % Polyamide): Velour Fabric Colors (100% Polyester): Leather:
  • Arne Jacobsen Swan Sofa in Milani Fabric
    dwr.com
Before the Swan Sofa (1958), Arne Jacobsen’s architecture and designs were shaped by an assumption of’ natural ways of resisting. In other words, he could make them go only so far in becoming the structures he desired. With new technologies, however, the old rules no longer applied, and he was able to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. The Swan Sofa is now made from polyurethane foam, but at the time, Jacobsen used Styropore® to create its continuous shape. Designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, for which Jacobsen was the architect. A single upholsterer hand-sews the fabric onto the frame of Swan. Original design and licensed manufacture by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland.

  • Irving Harper and George Nelson Nelson Marshmallow Sofa in Crepe
    dwr.com
If only all design "failures" were so successful. The inspiration for the Nelson Marshmallow Sofa (1956) was launched when an inventor approached George Nelson and Irving Harper with a planned "self-skinned" injection plastic disc that would be inexpensive to produce and unerringly durable. As the proposed cushions had a maximum diameter of 12", the designers perched 18 of them atop a steel frame. Sadly, the inventor's vision for high-resiliency, low-cost cushions never came to fruition, but the design was so compelling that Herman Miller chose to produce it anyway. Designed with both residential and commercial applications in mind, the cushions are detachable for easy cleaning and therefore interchangeable to equalize wear. The atom-like appearance of the Marshmallow Sofa is a precursor to the aesthetic style of the pop art of the 1960s. This original is an authentic, fully licensed products of Herman Miller, Inc. Nelson is a trademark of Herman Miller, Inc. Made in U.S.A.

  • Ted Boerner Theatre Sofa in Ultrasuede
    dwr.com
As a theater and dance student at the University of West Virginia, Ted Boerner developed an intuitive sense of the body and the space it occupies – an awareness that now lends his furniture its genial angles and careful proportions. He attended NYU for grad school, and began his career as a set and costume designer. “Propping scenes and imagining the things that characters would surround themselves with made me think about how important furniture is to people,” says the designer. Modern sofas often claim minimalist appeal, but few can also tout the comfort of the Theatre Collection (2001). Designed to accommodate the human body with studied proportions and simple geometry, Theatre’s comfort stems from its form rather than excessive layers of stuffing. With a gently angled backrest, full seat depth and elevated armrests, Boerner’s signature artisan details are evident throughout. A gleaming chromed steel base runs the entire depth of the design, and welted seams lend strength and definition to the upholstery. Ships with legs unattached to save on packing. Made in U.S.A.

The Baker Sofa was created in 1951, the year that Juhl brought international recognition to Danish design with his U.S. debut in the "Good Design" exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York. This was also the year when he was the architect appointed to represent Denmark in creating the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Oh, and did we mention he had just turned 39? In looking at his Baker Sofa, we can see how Juhl was influenced by modern sculpture, like the moving mobiles created by Alexander Calder. Another recognizable Juhl characteristic is how one element appears suspended over another, with a space in between. In doing this with the back of this sofa, he gave the Baker a surprising visual lightness for a sofa of this size. (Imagine how different it would look as one solid piece.) This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Onecollection, House of Finn Juhl™. Made in Denmark.

This Daybed (2004) was designed “to be seen in the round,” says Craig Bassam, by which he means that it can be seen and used from all sides. Such an approach isn’t surprising from a design team living in a glass house where furniture is visible from every angle, whether you’re standing inside or out. The house is the work of Philip Johnson, the architect who designed the Glass House for his own private residence in New Canaan, Connecticut. To see how seamlessly this Daybed (and all the furniture BassamFellows has created) works in a space designed by the iconic Johnson, makes it very clear that these are the next icons – destined to become highly collectible. Bassam is an architect whose career started with Bruce Eeles, a disciple of Marcel Breuer. His partner, Scott Fellows is a Harvard MBA who transformed the Swiss firm Bally. Together they are BassamFellows, described as “the design world’s A-team” by The Times of London. This fully handcrafted Daybed is made of solid American black walnut that is sustainably and locally harvested. The leather cushions are hand stitched with inverted seams; the backrest adjusts to three positions. Made in U.S.A.
