Denim Forever
Looking ahead to Autumn/Winter 2012/2013, Leverton of Stylesight sees several key trends coming to light on the jeans front. “For denim laundries, we’re seeing washing moving into the digital age: photo-real printing and laser technology mean that all-over wash and laundry looks are being rendered by hi-spec machinery.” The resultant washes, she says, look super graphic and precise, bold, crisp and abstract.Volume is another big theme for the season. “The skin-tight jegging is continuing as new, hi-spec fabrications allow for more and more advances in stretch and recovery,” she says. On the flip side, fits are loosening up, with the up-sized, hourglass boyfriend and ultra-wide culottes key for women and the voluminous hotrod jean and extreme peg leg for men.And denim, she believes, will remain integral to consumers’ wardrobes, though, she allows, other casual fabrications are inching into the spotlight. “Product categories often have their ‘their time’ and there are lulls, but I feel that consumers are so much more demanding than they used to be, always looking for something new, always looking for something clever and cool. Denim is having its day right now, but at the same time, many retailers out there are complaining about the effect that the chino is having on the denim market. This effect means that denim jackets are selling much better than they used to, so it’s all swings and roundabouts at the end of the day.”
