  • Knoll International Knoll - Saarinen Tulip Stool
    connox.com
Eero Saarinen designed the first edition of the Tulip chair in 1953, presenting the basic of a revolutionary design classic among all chairs – there has never been a chair with one leg looking like such a harmonic piece before. The Tulip collection was developed with the manufacturer Knoll, and besides more seats it also includes a stool. The purist designed Tulip stool reminds us of the flowers of the same name and it combines modernity with classic Scandinavian design. The background of the design of Tulip is described by Eero Saarinen as follows: ”This is how four leg chairs as we knew them became one leg chairs.” The seat of the Tulip by Knoll is made of plastic and reinforced with fiberglass. It lies on a rotatable trumpet foot, cast out of weightless metal and coated with a Rilsan surface. Moreover there are further pieces of furniture available of the Tulip collection: The chair is also available as armchair. The Tulip chair can be ordered with a rotatable seat and the inside can be ordered upholstered or with a separate cushion. The covers are available with different fabrics and in different colours. We will gladly advise you regarding the colour and the shape of your individual Tulip pieces. More details: Characteristics: Eero Saarinen’s Tilip Chairs Collection includes an armchair, one without armrests, one with rotatable base and also a stool. The chairs are aavailable with upholstery or with a seat cushion. The rotatable base chair with upholstered inside completes the collection. The KnollStudio logo and the signature of Eero Saarinen are under the base. Construction: Leg of cast aluminium with Rilsan coating. The seat is made of molded fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Surface: Seat and base in black or white. Awards: Award of the Musuem of Modern Art, New York, 1969 / Federal Republic Prize for Product Design / “Gute Form”, Germany, 1969 / Award for the design career by the Design Center Stuttgart, Germany, 1962.

    hivemodern.com
Design Eero Saarinen, 1956. Aluminum base, upholstery. Made in USA by Knoll. In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. He designed the 1956 Tulip collection in terms of its setting, rather than a particular shape. "In any design problem, one should seek the solution in terms of the next largest thing." He said. "If the problem is a chair, then its solution must be found in the way it relates to the room..." In Tulip, Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award, the Tulip is Saarinen's genius solution to clearing up the "slum of legs" that populates the under-carriage of most dining sets. The Saarinen tulip stools are cast aluminum with a swivel base. There is a Rilsan coated finish for the black and white stools. Platinum stools consist of a high-resilient polyurethane enamel wet coat with a clear satin finish. The signature of Eero Saarinen is located on the underside of the base. 15.5" dia. | 16.5" h.

  • Vitra Eames & Saarinen Organic Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Charles Eames & Eero Saarinen, 1940. Laminate seat shell, beech legs, upholstery. Made in Germany by Vitra. For the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition held by the Museum of Modern Art, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen created an entire series of versions of the Organic chair, each intended for a different sitting position. The designs were ahead of their time, but never went into production owing to a lack of technology. Not until after 1950 was it possible to produce (and sell) larger numbers of organically molded seat shells, such as the Eames' famous Plastic Armchair or Saarinen's Tulip chair. While the Organic chair is a comfortable small reading armchair, the Organic Highback has a higher backrest and neck support. In addition, the armrests and seat area are broader and longer. Available in an assortment of vibrantly colored fabrics. Beech legs, stained black. low back: 32.5" h | 26.5" d | 28.5" w | seat: 13.75" h | 22.25" d. high back: 42.25" h | 31" d | 33.5" w.
