  • Saarinen Tulip Dining Table By Knoll
    2modern.com
Eero Saarinen did not, in fact, invent the pedestal table, but we might be forgiven for thinking he did. The Saatinen Tulip Dining Table was a revolutionary design, in part, because it stood in such stark contrast to the standard pedestal table designed before Saarinen's Tulip collection for Knoll entered the design scene in 1957. “The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs,” he told Time magazine in 1956. And so he did, with a base said to be inspired by "a drop of high viscosity liquid." Intrigued by the possibilities in emerging technologies like molded plywood and fiberglass, Saarinen, a Finn, was also predisposed to the Nordic design sensibilities of simplicity and rationality. Half a century later, it's that clarity of vision that elevates Saarinen Tulip Table from merely beautiful to full-fledged classic. Features: The Eero Saarinen Collection. Designed by Eero Saarinen 1957. Tabletop features beveled edge. Top attaches to base with threaded rod. Tabletops available in a wide range of laminates, woods, marbles and granites. Base is heavy molded cast aluminum available with white, black or platinum paint. GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified. This product is available in more colors and finishes.

  • Artek Kiki Lounge Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Ilmari Tapiovaara, 1960. Lacquered steel frame, PU foam & dacron, upholstery. Made in Finland by Artek. Tapiovaara wanted to design inexpensive furniture for a broader audience. He made use of materials that were readily available in Finland in the 1940s, such as solid birch. Later in the 1950s, he began to develop multipurpose chairs made of steel tubing and plywood. Ilmari Tapiovaara designed Kiki in 1960. It was originally conceived as a chair whose stackability allowed it to be used to seat large groups, such as in auditoriums. In the Kiki series Tapiovaara employed a more clean cut design idiom instead of the more organic style he had favored previously. Instead of wood, he chose oval steel tubing as the structural and unifying element of the whole Kiki collection. Kiki was a success, establishing the current direction for furniture design at this time. Kiki's timeless and elegant design idiom has made it one of the most popular pieces of public furniture in Finland. Llmari Tapiovaara was one of the greatest interior architects and designers of his era. With the mind of an explorer and a soul of a craftsman, Tapiovaara was always seeking for new solutions to improve everyday objects. During his long career Tapiovaara created dozens of iconic objects loved by the public. • Modernica Lantern Bubble Pendant Light By George Nelson
    heals.co.uk
The Bubble Lamp was designed by George Nelson in 1947 as an innovative alternative to pendant lighting. Initially, it was produced by Howard Miller in 1952 and ceased production in 1979. In the 1990's Modernica reissued these timeless lamps, which are as evocative now, as they were back then. Nelson dressed the steel wire skeleton with a spray coating of translucent plastic polymer and created a lamp that simultaneously softens and anchors surrounding space. The Bubble Lamp is featured in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Adjustable cable length up to 180cm. Without question, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp Saucer Pendant is a tried-and-true standard of the modern vocabulary. George Nelson designed the first bubble lamps in 1947. These lamps with their simple sculptural shapes were constructed of an innovative taut plastic that coated a steel wire-frame. Nelson's unique design and ingenious use of materials prove to eliminate glare and provide an abundant, yet diffused light. A quality which alone is unique to this material. Since 1989, Modernica has proven itself with its steadfast commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship. Being at the forefront of rediscovering and relaunching out-of-production pieces, Modernica still uses the same methods and materials to handcraft each lamp that were used in 1952 with Howard Miller's first production run. From the forming of the wire-frame, to the spraying of the vinyl form, one-by-one, each Bubble Lamp is constructed to last decades and each Bubble Lamp is built to George Nelson's original specifications. The George Nelson Bubble Lamp collection is featured in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Handcrafted in Michigan, U.S.A. Dimensions : H27 x D28cm, 7kg. Nickel Ceiling Plate 13.5cm.
