  • Mater Shell Bar Stool - Black Leather, Sirka Grey Oak Base
    shophorne.com
The Shell Chair developed out of Michael Dreeben’s ongoing interest in traditional craft practices in north India - in this case saddle making. Exquisitely made saddles have been produced in India for centuries, and although some horse culture persists, it’s waning as India becomes more technologically developed. The Shell Chairs incentivize these skilled tradesmen and women by providing the artisans with a new market for their craft, and hopefully encouraging them to pass it on to younger generations. The shape of the chair is indebted to Scandinavian design of the mid-twentieth century and embraces some of its core values: it’s clean of line and emphasizes the leather forming and stitching, it’s deeply comfortable, and it’s durable like the saddles it’s derived from. Crafted from thick top-grain leather, with reasonable care, these chairs will last for decades. Frames: Sirka Grey Oak Swivel Base. Leathers: Black Leather.

  • David Geckeler Nerd Barstool
    dwr.com
Based in Berlin, designer David Geckeler thrives on a multidisciplinary approach, often working on projects in furniture, tableware and lighting simultaneously. His Nerd Stool (2012) was honored with the 2011 Talent Award from Muuto, the Danish design company that handpicks the brightest design talent and invites them to express their stories through everyday objects. “Danish simplicity and iconic expression are combined in this stool,” says Geckeler. “The curved shape of the seat invites the user to sit on the stool from several angles, while the low backrest provides pleasant, comfortable support.” When asked to explain the stool’s name, he replied, “To me, Nerd describes its personality and design.” By that, we’re assuming he means the sleek construction with no visible screws is a cool feat of engineering that would rock a furniture nerd’s world. Made in Latvia. Please note seat width is roughly 2" less than overall width.
  • Modernica Side Bar Stool - Dowel Swivel Base
    shophorne.com
The Case Study Fiberglass Dowel Barstool with swivel base is an essential for the modern home. Available in a myriad of colors, choose your wire-frame in either zinc-plated steel or black powder-coated steel, and finish your design by choosing either solid maple dowels or solid walnut dowels. Easily one of the most important and recognizable designs of the twentieth century. The Fiberglass Shell Chairs were originally designed in 1948, as an entry in The Museum of Modern Art’s International Design Competition. At the time, no one could possibly have anticipated the massive success and longevity of this iconoclastic design. In the early fifties, fiberglass was considered an ultra-high tech material. Produced with a mixture of resin and glass fibers, it was lightweight, yet heavy-duty. Initial development and production was through Zenith Plastics—early pioneers of developing fiberglass for household and military applications. As for the chair bases, they were cleverly designed to provide a number of leg options that would be interchangeable within and between the arm shell and the side shell. The shell chairs were first available in the spring of 1950. The first runs of the chairs were produced in only three colors; griege, elephant-hide gray, and parchment—all of which had interesting translucent qualities. The chairs were distributed until 1983. In 2000, Modernica revived this potentially lost art of high-pressure, molded fiberglass. Modernica creates each shell, by hand, one-by-one, in our Los Angeles factory—just as they had been designed, developed, and produced in Southern California in the 1950s. Modernica uses all of the original presses and specialized equipment obtained from Century Plastics. To ensure authenticity of production, the initial shell chair production was overseen by Sol Fingerhut and Irv Green, the same team employed over sixty years ago to develop the original technology. Modernica creates each chair with the charge of adhering to the original tactile qualities, texture, and characteristics that alone are unique to the fiberglass shell chair. Our historic equipment has created thousands of chairs for three generations of chair lovers — and everyday Modernica continues to produce beautiful chairs for upcoming generations. Choose from a wide range of shell colors and chair base options. Modernica offers the flexibility to build a chair to suit your individual style and needs. Please note that due to the nature of fiberglass, some "hairs" may vary in darkness and color due to the singeing/burning process used to create the seat. These fibers add to the uniqueness of each chair. Handcrafted in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

  • Norman Cherner Cherner® Barstool
    dwr.com
Although a pioneer in prefab housing, Norman Cherner is best known for his molded plywood seating line he created for – and ultimately sued – the manufacturer, Plycraft. After telling Cherner that his design for what is now known as the Cherner® Chair (1958) had been scrapped, Plycraft's owner continued to produce it, claiming himself as the designer. The Chair's popularity soared when it appeared in Norman Rockwell's 1961 painting "The Artist at Work" on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. Cherner sued, and while Plycraft agreed to pay Cherner royalties, the line was out of production by the early 1970s. In 1999, Cherner's sons formed the Cherner Chair Company to revive the designs and produce them as their father originally intended. Constructed of laminated plywood of graduating thicknesses, from 5 ply at the perimeter edge of the seat to 15 ply at the slender waist, and braced with a solid steel crossbar, the Barstool possesses exceptional structural strength and dramatic sculptural beauty. This Barstool is an authentic, fully licensed product of Cherner Chair Company. Cherner Chair is a licensed trademark of Cherner Chair Company. Made in U.S.A.

  • Emeco 1006 Navy® Counter Stool with Arms in Brushed Finish
    dwr.com
Legend has it that Emeco founder Wilton Dinges tested the strength of a 1006 Navy Chair (1944) by tossing it out a sixth-story window. The people on the sidewalk below were a bit surprised, but the chair was fine, with the exception of a few scratches. Today, Emeco still uses the same 77-step process that Dinges perfected 70 years ago to satisfy the military’s need for lightweight, corrosion-resistant chairs for destroyers and submarines. The company’s proprietary metal processing method yields aluminum three times stronger than steel – and a chair so durable that it has an estimated life span of 150 years. Emeco’s all-aluminum chairs and stools come with a lifetime guarantee, and generations from now, when your great-great-grandchildren finally manage to wear out a chair that’s tested to withstand 1,700 pounds of weight (big kids), the aluminum can be fully recycled and made into something else. Stainless steel foot caps are covered with clear plastic glides to prevent floor scratches and carpet snags. Stool with brushed finish is suitable for outdoor use. This is the authentic 1006 Navy Stool by Emeco. Made in U.S.A. Made from 80% recycled aluminum (40% post-consumer, 40% post-industrial), which requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce virgin aluminum. In continuous production since 1944.

The designer, who helped found the Memphis Group and created the iconic Olivetti Valentine typewriter, finished his seating collection for Emeco shortly before his death on December 31, 2007. The name “Nine-0” refers to the age Sottsass was when he designed the collection, which is handcrafted in Pennsylvania using the same 77-step process that Emeco first developed for its 1006 Navy® Chair. Sottsass was one of the first designers to use the 1006 Navy in residential applications, and the Nine-0 is his reinterpretation of that classic chair. The Nine-0, like all Emeco seating, it is crafted of 80% recycled aluminum and has an estimated lifespan of 150 years. Stacks up to six high. Nine-0 chairs and stools contribute to LEED™ credit #4.2 Recycled Content (and credit #5.1 if shipped within 500 miles of Hanover, Pennsylvania). Made in U.S.A.

  • Artek Pirkka Bar Stool
    shophorne.com
Ilimari Tapiovaara was committed to designing furniture for a much broader market. His goal was to produce quality inexpensive furniture that was made from materials that were readily available in Finland. The rustic simplicity and smaller structure made the Pirkka Collection very popular for use in the smaller homes in the post war era of the 1950s. The Pirkka Collection is made of solid wood with simple, clean lines which make for stylish functionality. The wood is joined together using no screws making it remarkably lightweight. The rustic table carries with it the aesthetic appeal of modern design even 50 years later. The table is available in a variety of lengths making it ideal for several different locations. The bench can be paired with the table or used as a stand lone piece. The wider than usual width makes it a comfortable seat. The side chair also pairs well with the table but can stand on its own and the stool completes the set and is available in 4 heights to make it even more versatile. The seats and table top are stained pine with a black lacquered solid birch frame.

  • BMW Group DesignworksUSA 1951 Counter Stool
    dwr.com
After an eBay auction turned up a chair made by Emeco 50 years ago, the company decided to reinterpret the design. Originally made for Navy hospitals in 1951, the chair needed a few modifications. Emeco invited Adrian van Hooydonk and his team at BMW Group DesignworksUSA to join the project. In the same way that the original Mini Cooper relates the new Mini, everyone was in favor of maintaining the original 1951 Chair's simple utilitarian style and aluminum construction, but the lines and surfaces had to be reconsidered. Slightly reshaped, the new 1951 Chair (2005) has more "attitude" and can now be stacked up to 6 high (10-12 high with a dolly). Newinclude durable molded ABS plastic and 80% recycled aluminum. The 1951 Collection was also expanded to include a counter stool and barstool. The 1951 in white is suitable for outdoor use. Emeco's use of post-consumer recycled aluminum makes the collection LEED compliant. Made in U.S.A.
