Reacting against the 'cosy era' that was dominating Denmark at the time, Bonderup and Thorup wanted to create a lamp that incorporated sharp, clean lines and a geometric shape. • Charles and Ray Eames Eames® Molded Fiberglass Stacking Side Chair (DFSS)
    dwr.com
Charles and Ray Eames believed “design is a method of action,” and they continually updated their work as newbecame available. “The chair that Charles and Ray were designing,” explains grandson Eames Demetrios, “is the chair that’s made tomorrow.” The duo originally designed their molded chair in metal and entered it as a prototype in MoMA’s 1948 International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, then refashioned it in light yet strong fiberglass just two years later. In the 1980s, after determining fiberglass production was detrimental to the environment, Herman Miller ceased production to explore more sustainable options, eventually choosing recyclable polypropylene. The company never quite forgot about fiberglass, however, and it recently began researching greener production methods. The Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair (1950) is the end result, constructed using a cleaner process but true to the original with its beloved variegated surface. This reintroduced version comes in a range of reformulated semi-gloss color pigments that faithfully reproduce the vintage ones. Its deep seat pocket and waterfall edge keep you comfortable by reducing pressure on the backs of your thighs. This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. DFSS stands for dining-height fiberglass side chair with stacking base (stacks up to 14 high). Made of 99% recyclableand covered by Herman Miller’s take-back program for environmentally sound recycling (should you ever wish to part with this chair).

  • Saarinen Tulip Dining Table By Knoll
    2modern.com
Eero Saarinen did not, in fact, invent the pedestal table, but we might be forgiven for thinking he did. The Saarinen Tulip Dining Table was a revolutionary design, in part, because it stood in such stark contrast to the standard pedestal table designed before Saarinen's Tulip collection for Knoll entered the design scene in 1957. “The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs,” he told Time magazine in 1956. And so he did, with a base said to be inspired by "a drop of high viscosity liquid." Intrigued by the possibilities in emerging technologies like molded plywood and fiberglass, Saarinen, a Finn, was also predisposed to the Nordic design sensibilities of simplicity and rationality. Half a century later, it's that clarity of vision that elevates Saarinen's Tulip Dining Table from merely beautiful to full-fledged classic. Construction and Details Tabletop features beveled edge. Top attaches to base with threaded rod. Tabletops available in a wide range of laminates, woods, marbles and granites. Base is heavy molded cast aluminum available with white, black or platinum paint. GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified. Veneer Tops: Tops are constructed of veneered medium density fiberboard with a cathedral grain pattern in various clear or toned stains. Oval dining tops are 11/4" thick. Edges are 1/4" solid wood to match face veneer. Marble and Laminate Tops: Bevel-edged satin smooth laminate or marble. 3/4" thick coated marble tops have transparent polyester coating to help eliminate use-associated stains. 3/4" thick natural marble tops and granite tops have protective sealer. Laminate tops are 1.06" thick. Base: Heavy molded cast aluminum, strap-polished. Black and white bases are coated in a tough, abrasion-resistant Rilsan finish. Platinum bases consist of a highly resilient polyurethane enamel wet coat with a clear satin finish.

  • Herman Miller® Eames® Molded Fiberglass Armchair Rocker
    hivemodern.com
Design Charles & Ray Eames, 1948. Molded fiberglass, metal frame, solid wood rockers. Made by Herman Miller® "The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests." -Charles Eames. Thanks to a new proprietary process of producing fiberglass, Herman Miller is once again able to produce the Eames original 1950's Molded Fiberglass Chair safely by means of a less volatile, monomer-free "dry bind" process. Like the original shell chairs, the new fiberglass finish has the same covetable surface variation and tell-tale fiberglass striation that have attracted avid vintage collectors for decades. Available in both the arm and side chair formats in eight archival colors, the chairs can be configured with a choice of wire, dowel leg, stacking, rocker, and 4-leg bases. An array of trim, finely tailored Hopsak fabrics designed by Alexander Girard, Herman Miller's Textile Director from 1952 to 1973, round out the collection of shell customization options, fully restoring the integrity of the original 1953 shell chair offerings. All chairs can be recycled through the Herman Miller Take Back Program. With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look."
