I walked into the pool of possible tributes, wearing the same expression as each one of them. Fear. I was terrified of being selected as Tribute. Being 17 my name was scrawled down on 5 pieces of paper.
After my finger was pricked for blood i waited with my hands by my sides. They shook far too much, but then again they did at this time every year.
My eyes were drawn to the stage when our escort Phoenix walked causally to the microphone, i clapped along with everyone else. Phoenix was known for her outlandish looks. Her blue hair and matching lips stood out like the water at the beach.
With a smile on her face she said. "Welcome all! To another year of the Reaping!" Her tone was cheerful like this was something to be excited about. But she could be, she lived in luxury in the Capitol, if she was standing here now she wouldn't find anything cheerful about The Hunger Games.
My eyes stayed focused on her and everything she was saying, just in case a curl ball was thrown into the mix. "This year we have a very special surprise for you all! Once only... This Hunger Games will Reap two girls instead of one!" Just like that.
Murmurs erupted throughout the surrounding areas and the boys all had smiles and were sighing with relief, whereas the girls were holding their breaths as well as their sister, friends or cousins hands. I was standing there completely shell shocked.
"Let's Begin Shall we!" At this point my eyes were beginning to form tears, which very rarely happened. I was thankful at that moment when i realised that i only really had to watch out for myself as i had no siblings who could be reaped.
The first girls name was called. "Jacinta Blakeslee" I looked around immanently, feeling a slight relief as it wasn't me. I looked down at my feet, my chest rising and falling quickly.
The rest was quite a blur. Screams were coming from down the front but since i was in the middle area i couldn't see. Then out of nowhere a familiar voice called out from over the noise.
"I volunteer" my eyes widened. "I volunteer as tribute!"
I knew that voice from somewhere and i had a faint idea but i knew it wasn't true. But as Emma walked up onto the stage by heart sank. It was her. Emma Shield's my best friend in the whole world was standing up on the stage with Phoenix. She just volunteered. I didn't listen to anything else being said until the next tributes name fell from the lips of our escort.
"Rae Marx" I thought i was about to pass out. The crowed before me parted and i had a clear view of the stage. Phoenix was smiling and Emma had done what i thought i was about to do. Faint. Her body hit the stage with a thud and i cried out to her. Running up and being by her side.
