Oh mustaches, how lovely you are. Always coercing that bad fake english accent out of me. Mustaches are pretty awesome though, and that quirky mustache trend out there is following close behind. So, to be as awesome as you can be you can seriously just wear a mustache ring, and be, well, awesome! Haha, anyway, here's the tutorial!
You will need:
❀ #6 Shrink plastic
❀ Blank Ring Base
❀ Black Nail Polish
❀ Diamond Glaze-This is optional!
❀ Nail File (you are just using this to smooth the edges)
01+ First of all, you need a template, a one I found on here will work pretty well: http://www.polyvore.com/mustache/thing?id=24418077 but if you prefer to use something different you can! Think of all the different mustaches you can use! You can even freehand it if you're confident about the symmetry of it all too.
02+ Place your shrink plastic on top of the template.
03+ Trace out the figure, and cut it out with a pair of scissors. Un-shrunk shrink plastic is normally soft and thin, so when you cut it with scissors the edge where you cut can run farther than you want it to and ruin your design when you’re rounding a curve. So, cut slowly and carefully, like you would with wrapping (cause that stuff is a female dog).
04+ And now for baking! Place your cut out on aluminum foil and preheat your toaster oven.
05+ In your preheated oven, place the cutout in its aluminum foil and wait for it to shrink. It usually takes only 15-30 seconds for it to curl up, flatten out, and revert to its original shape (except now it’s a lot smaller).
06+ When you feel that it’s flattened out completely, turn off the oven and wait 10 seconds before taking the shrinky dink out of the oven. This is so no one kills themselves or loses a finger because of my DIY. -_-
07+ Quickly remove the foil and shrinky dink and place it on a flat surface (like a kitchen table). Place another square of aluminum foil on top of it, put a heavy book on it like a sandwich, and press. This helps ensure that the product hardens flat. (We have finally found a reason behind science textbooks!). Remove the book after 5 seconds, and voila!
08+ Okay, so not voila much, but it is getting there. You'll want to use an old nail file and file away the rough edges and bits until you feel it's perfection :3
09+ After filing use some pretty black nail polish to cover the mustache shape. Your nail polish can have sparkles if you want it to be, by the way. Wait for it to dry completely.
010+ You don’t have to do this last step, but if you put a layer of Diamond Glaze on top of the dried shrinky dink it will look more smooth and finished. You need to wait 12 hours for Diamond Glaze to set though ;/
011+ When it’s all dry, attach the shrinky dink to your ring blank! Use very very strong glue girls!
And for the final step: Wear your mustache ring and smile mysteriously when asked where you bought it!
