Jo,
LST
I adjusted myself on the couch, looking around quietly. I was full like an egg, my mom had offered to cook us a suptuous lunch for Christmas and Ryan and I had been glad to say yes. Despite how many doubts I had about my parents being in town and spending the holiday together I had to admit that it was going good, actually it was pretty awesome. My eyes landed on Sienna, who was sitting on the floor too busy playing with her new toys to notice anything else. To call her spoiled was the understatement of the year.
"How long did you say you're going to stay here?" My dad voice broke into my thoughts as he talked to Jake who looked pretty amused despite there was nothing funny about his life at the moment.
I felt a pair of eyes on me and, like I expected, Ry was looking at me, her face tired as she walked over me. "I want to hear this one." She sighed quietly.
I made room for her next to me, allowing her to sit down. "A few weeks top." My brother answered, running his hand through his hair nonchalantly.
"A few days top you mean." I corrected him. We got used to have him around since it had been how long? Two months? But I was starting to think that he'd never go away.
"Same difference." He shot me a blank stare as I resisted the urge of rolling my eyes.
"Ryan and Jo had been so nice to let you stay here while looking for a new apartment." My dad said quietly, obviously not aware of what was going on in Jake's life. Oh how much I loved lies on Christmas.
My wife raised one eyebrow at Jake as she nodded, "Even too nice." She made it sound like she was joking but the truth was that she deserved a statue for being so patient.
"Hey, I help you with Sienna." He protested.
I ignored him, even though that was true, and looked at Ry instead. "You're a saint." I whispered and pressed a kiss on her forehead as my hand landed on her belly which was really big.
"I know." She answered quietly, not really looking like she was paying much attention to me and closed her eyes, "Can you get me some water baby?"
"Of course." I smiled at her and walked to the kitchen where David was pouring himself some whiskey. Since we had found out Ry was pregnant again I hadn't touched alcohol to show some solidarity. "Trying to get drunk already?" I joked.
"Nah, I'm just enjoying the fine things you keep in your cabinet." He smirked and downed the drink before setting the empty glass in the sink, "I'm high on cuteness."
I shot him an amused look since I knew that he was talking about the way Ry and I were with Sienna. "Good for you." I grinned before taking some water and walking back to the living room which was more crowded than usual. Wasn't that what I had always wanted? A happy family spending time together. I looked at Ryan then at my mom who was watching her closely, "Here." I said handing her the glass.
"Ryan's not feeling good." My mom said quietly, causing one million alarms to start ringing in my head. I couldn't help but worry, mostly now that she was so close to her term.
"What's wrong baby?" I asked as I tried to sound calm, watching her swallow the water before she gave the empty glass to my mom. The two women seemed to get closer again and despite how that makes me happy I felt like I had other things to think about now.
"I'm just tired, don't worry." She answered in a soft tone, looking at me with the same smile she always used whenever I was overreacting. So yes, maybe I was.
I offered her my hand, "Come with me, you need some rest. I'm sure no one will get offended if you lay down for a while." I suggested, knowing that her sister or my mom would take care of Sienna if she needed something.
"I can't leave to take a nap during Christmas," Ryan said although her hesitation was weak and it barely showed in her voice. Despite being pregnant she had done so many things to get ready for the holiday and in order to give Sienna all the best she could have, the only thing was that now she was exhausted and probably needed one week straight of sleep.
"No one will even notice that you're missing," I tried to make it better, but a pout had appeared on her face. I had to admit that I had chosen the wrong words, but still.
"I'm the size of a blimp... of course they will notice," She said seriously, setting her hand on top of mine as it rested on her stomach. I laughed and guided her down the hallway and towards our bedroom, helping her sit down on the bed in case she couldn't do it on her own. "You're not supposed to laugh!"
I pushed her hair out of her face, tucking it behind her ear before tilting my head down and kissing her softly. "You're beautiful Ry," I said sincerely with my lips still lingering against hers. "The size of a blimp, but gorgeous," I added, kissing her again before she had the chance to protest the gesture. I had learned through the first pregnancy that there was no way of convincing my wife that she wasn't huge, that the only thing changing was her belly and her b.oobs, so the only possible thing to do was to joke about it and compliment her.
She grinned against my lips, breaking the kiss and forcing a glare while trying to stop grinning. "You're not supposed to agree with me on that one," She said, referring to the blimp comment.
"Yesterday you told me that you wanted me to agree with you always," I replied with a small sigh, a grin on my face as I tried to act serious. "Lift your arms up," I pressed on and she did as she was told, the much too tight dress moving up her body as she adjusted her body to help.
"Are we getting naked while our families are in the next room?" She joked but raised an eyebrow as she smirked at me. "Naughty..."
"No," I smirked back at her and shook my head. "You're hot."
"You're hot instead..." She trailed off and fell back in the bed, looking relieved instantly.
I laughed softly as she closed her eyes, "I meant that you're burning up Ry... Are you feeling okay?"
"Tired," She said simply with a yawn to prove her point.
"Are you cramping? In pain? Anything?" I asked, trying to not sound too worried since I was always told that I worried too much.
Her eyes fluttered back open and she noticed the concern in my tone had changed just as much as my expression, "I'm fine baby. Honestly."
I nodded slowly, "But you'll tell me if anything changes?"
She sighed and ran a hand through her hair. "Minimal cramping and I feel like the heater has been turned on full blast for the past hour," She admitted. "But I'm fine."
"Can you put pajamas on?"
She frowned, "Do I have to?"
"I'm not going to let you nap naked." I said seriously, watching her closely as she blinked her dark eyes at me in an innocent way. That reminded me so much of Sienna, it was crazy how much alike the two girls were.
"Why not?" She asked quietly as she stared back at me, her body motionless as her chest heaved up and down sowly, "I'm hot you said that youself."
I walked over the closet, shaking my head, "One moment you're hot the next one you're freezing." I argued, knowing how easily her body changed its perception of temperature. There were nights when she was drenched in sweat despite the winter, while others she was cold like ice and all over me to get warmer.
"I thought I was always hot." She protested from behind me, making me turn my head in her direction and, just like I was expecting, she was pouting.
"You are but that's not what I meant silly girl." I sighed and grinned a little, grabbing one of my old t-shirts and tossing it to her.
Her eyes barely looked at the piece of fabric as she rolled over on to her side, "I'd thank you but it didn't really sound like a compliment." She sighed and used her feet to kick my tee off the bed.
I raised one eyebrow, crossing my arms against my chest, "Way to treat my things."
"Way to treat your wife." She said back, the pout still in place.
I shook my head and reached for my shirt again, walking over the bed to sit down next to her. I knew that I had done nothing, that was just my boo being silly to get my attentions when, really, she always had those. She was my everything, plus it was nearly impossible to ignore such a gorgeous and amazing woman. "You need to put something on baby." I said quietly.
A grin appeared immediatly on her lips, wide and silly, "You're talking to me like you talk to Sienna."
"Go figure why." I said back and grinned wider than her, giving her an amused look.
She smacked my arm with no conviction, "Meh." Was the only sound that came out of her mouth and I could tell she was exhausted already.
I offered her my hand, "Let me help you." I smiled at her with nothing but love and adoration, liking to take care of her more than anything else. I was so in love and so dedicated that sometimes I felt like she could ask me anything, even the craziest thing, and I'd always say yes. She grabbed my hand and got up in a sitting position but didn't do more, staring at me in silence. I put the t-shirt on her slowly, the head first then her arms before pulling it all the way down her torso. "See it wasn't that bad." I said once I was done.
She shook her head and smiled a little, "Will you nap with me?"
"I'm afraid I can't baby." I answered quietly, stroking her cheek as I leaned into her to kiss her lips and in that exact moment we heard Sienna screaming.
"Maybe I shouldn't either." She tensed immediatly, looking more awake then before.
"No." I said and forced her to lay down before I laid next to her too. I knew it was hard to ignore our baby, but she was probably just being stubborn and she had the whole family with her anyway. We weren't doing nothing wrong, but still. "You need to rest. I'll stay with you until you'll fall asleep." I said eventually, wrapping my arm around her shoulders.
"You're so perfect," Ryan whispered, nuzzling up to my side and pressing her lips against my neck lightly while her eyes shut. Her smile was back in its place as I wrapped my arm around her tightly while I thought about her words. When I was younger, meaning a few years ago which seemed to be already decades away, I used to think that I really was perfect and how silly and arrogant of me that had been, real perfection had come into my life with my wife and my daughter, I was nothing before that.
I kissed the top of her head, adjusting my body and moving her in the process. I wasn't too comfortable with what I was wearing and how Ry was laying, but I wouldn't complain. "I try," I replied in a soft tone.
"You don't instead," She shook her head, setting a hand on my chest. "You're a natural."
Sienna's crying came to a halt and Ry let out a sigh of relief, her body finally able to relax as we reveled in the silence... until a loud shrill scream made her eyes flutter open.
I sat up, her body still beside me on the bed as she watched me stand up and fix my shirt. "I better go check on her," I said, already starting for the door.
"Jo," She shook her head and inched toward the edge of the bed, stopping and holding her stomach. She looked at me, the look on her face not really familiar but I had seen it before. She was in pain and I felt the blood drain from my brain. Here we are, I thought. "She'll be fine. Jake knows how to calm her down and if not, my dad -" She stopped again and hunched over at the waist, my arm wrapping around her to guide her to sit back down.
"Your water broke," I said in a daze of a tone.
She looked down and sure enough, I was right. "F.ck," She said and tried to stand up, but I made sure she stayed put. "I've ruined the sheets."
"Do you have your bag packed?" I stood back up and paced around the room, looking for her hospital ready bag which had to exist since she had leaned from her past experience that babies always arrived unexpected.
"No," She said, staring at me as I bent down for a diaper bag and started shoving Sienna's things into it, enough diapers to last a week. She grinned at him and tried to stand up again, this time with more success, "I need to wash the sheets... this is disgusting."
"We need to get you to the hospital," I retorted, sweatpants in hand as I made my way across the room towards her.
"We have time," She said seriously, letting out a deep breath.
"Yeah, time to go the hospital." I repeated again, "You need to get dressed."
"I can't." She said with her lips pursed in a straight line as I forced myself to not freak out. We had been through this once already, I kept repeating to myself, we had seen how it works...only, now Ryan was going to pop out two babies and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried.
"Why?" I asked in a quiet tone even if I was exploding inside, almost upset for her not having her bag ready even though I knew that was just my anxiety getting the best of me.
She set her hands against my chest, looking up at me, "My legs are...it's gross." She muttered and that was when I understood.
"Right." I reasoned, my brain working quicker than usual as I gave her a reassuring look, or at least I hoped it was. "I'll take care of it, okay?" I didn't give her time to answer and went straight to the bathroom where I dampened a sponge and grabbed a clean towel before going back to Ry who was now sitting and struggling to slide her panties off.
"I can't take them off! I can't!" She said out loud, her voice whiny and frustration showing in her tone. My poor baby.
"Let me help you." I said quietly and pushed her soaked panties off her legs before rubbing them with the sponge, trying to be gentle but fast.
She let me clean her, her teeth torturing her bottom lip as she held her belly, "I'm scared." She broke the silence eventually.
I looked up at her while I wiped her legs with the towel, "You were for Sienna too, but then everything went fine." I pointed out, trying to sound convincing when really I wasn't that convinced myself. I couldn't even imagine what she was about to go through, nature was crazy in some way.
"But they're two now-" She cut herself off, her eyes closing tightly as her face twisted in pain.
"We really have to go baby." I urged, pushing a clean pair of panties up her legs before doing the same with her sweatpants. "It's going to be okay, I'll be there with you."
She just nodded her head, her eyes opening again and I had the feeling she was trying hard to not show how much she was hurting. "Shoes." She instructed as she nodded towards the sneakers laying on the floor and in that moment someone knocked on the door.
A second later Jake walked into the room, holding Sienna by her hand. "Sorry, she kept asking for you." He said as he studied the expressions on our faces, "Is everything okay?"
"Ry's water broke." I explained, not even bothering to look at him as I helped Ry with her shoes.
"Ma-ma!" Sienna's voice echoed into the room and next thing I knew she was next to me, her tiny arms wrapped around her mom's leg.
"Oh baby, I'm here." Ry said softly, reaching for her face and stroking her cheek, "Go back to uncle Jake, he's fun."
My brother stared at us like he was looking at a car crash, "Do you need something?"
"Distract Sienna, we need to go to the hospital." I nodded and glanced at Ryan, looking for her approval.
"Yes," Ryan nodded and I wrapped an arm around her waist as she stood up. "Please don't watch TV with her all night... and make sure to brush her teeth. She usually goes to bed -"
"I know," Jake cut her off and picked her up, holding her tight against her chest. He grinned at her and she grabbed a fistful of his curls, "We can't watch the good stuff while there is company in my room, right?"
"Gross," Ry wrinkled her nose.
"What?" He looked up at us innocently, Ry's head tilting back to look at me as I glared at him.
"You better not watch po.rn while you babysit my daughter," I said in a flat tone and Jake snorted.
"Do you really think so lowly of me?" He asked and we both shot him blank stares. "Okay. Don't answer that."
"Jo, Ryan, is everything okay?" My mom appeared in the hallway as we made it through the doorway, Ally was behind her and had a horrified look on her face.
"Ryan's water broke," Jo said again, this time for another audience.
Ally's mouth fell open and she turned around as my dad poked his head around the corner, "Ry's going into labor!!"
He grabbed his coat, shoving both arms in and walking over to us at a powerful speed. He took the bag from my arm and slung it around his, "I'll drive."
I glanced at Ryan as chaos broke out in our apartment, everyone talking at once and making me want to scream. "Are you okay?" I whispered instead after wrapping both arms around her tighter, turning my body into her and hoping to not look concerned.
She nodded, "Yes, but I might hit Ally if she screams like that again."
"What do you want us to do?" My mom asked, her eyes bouncing back and forth between us.
Ry's dad started out the door, not even bothering to hear an answer, "I'll bring the car around!"
Ry sighed and leaned her body into mine, closing her eyes and breathing heavy. I wished I could do something, anything for her, but just like it had been the last time I was completely helpless. "David will drive us," I started and she made a sound that came out as a mix between a laugh, a snort, and a sigh. It wasn't like we really had any choice. "Just make sure Sienna is alright... Jake and Ally are good with her, but in case of any emergency, I'll have my phone."
Ry looked past my mother's shoulder and smile at our daughter who was sitting on the floor and playing with her toys. "Where is your phone?" She turned her head towards me, both of us being ushered out the door and I could already hear her dad honking.
"In my pocket," I replied and she raised an eyebrow.
"Are you sure?"
"Positive," I replied and she let it go. We walked over to the elevator, the lights alerting us as it got closer and closer to our floor. "F.ck," I muttered under my breath, using my free hand to pat my jean pockets.
She smiled at me as the door opened behind us, "Forgot your phone?" Yes, damn it.
I started to turn around, but she grabbed my arm, "My dad will have his phone. He never leaves it out of his reach."
"But what if-" I started and she cut me off, the look on her face enough to make me go quiet. I was nervous about Ryan giving birth, more than nervous actually, but I also had to think about the baby we were leaving at home. With my brother. Ry was right when she said I was overprotective. "Okay." I said eventually as we walked outside the building and toward David's car which was waiting for us. It was weird how a year and a half ago we had been in the same situation, but alone, while now we had our families to help us.
Ryan eased herself into the car while I held her hand to help her before I got in next to her, "You'll stay with me the whole time, right?" She asked, staring in front of her, her eyes staring at nothing really as we started moving.
I reached for her chin and tilted her head in my direction, gently, "I will, always." I said seriously. It wasn't just that I wanted to be there for her, I also thought that I'd die if I had to be outside her room waiting. When she didn't add anything, I added, "How are you feeling?"
"Like a whale about to give life." She sighed and her face twisted in pain again as she held her free hand on her belly, "F.uck."
"Breath baby." I said quietly.
"I am breathing!" She snapped, then she took a deep breath. "I just want to pop our babies out and see that they're healthy."
I couldn't help but smile at the thought of finally seeing my twin daughters after so many months waiting. "You're giving me the best Christmas present ever."
David, whose presence I had forgotten about, turned his head toward her daughter and grinned, "You should have put a bow on that belly."
