The Dries Van Noten spring 2013 show provided a brilliant and beautiful reinterpretation of the season’s key trends. Transparency, tartans, hyperbolic florals and unexpected textural accents—all augmenting elegantly louche silhouettes—resulted in a stunning collection that captured the Fashion Week zeitgeist while remaining completely unique.

Van Noten’s designs have never been minimalistic, and for this show he indulged in yard upon yard of diaphanous silk. His fall 2012 collection took much of its inspiration from kimonos, and that influence was still apparent for 2013: there were florals reminiscent of traditional chrysanthemum prints, beautifully folded necklines and billowing robes.

However, the new season’s looks were much lighter and more flowing. The addition of tartans and three-dimensional embroidery served as a lovely counterpoint as well, making the pieces more substantive without weighing them down. We’re always impressed with Mr. Van Noten, but this collection is particularly easy to fall in love with—it’s romance made cool.
