The DC silhouette is a sharp triangle standing on the sharp point. 

"Earrings should be on the ear or spray up (not down or dangly)" says Kibbe.
"Spray up" means that the shape of the earring follows the ear up, or is smaller down and larger up. Like an inverted triangle... 

Keep the shapes geometric and simple. Avoid ornate things, like antique pieces (unless they are very simple or Art Deco...) 
Keep the line elongated and straight, or sharp, like zigzags and lightning bolts.

There really is need for only two pairs of earrings for Classics: diamond studs and pearl studs.
