  • Eames DSW Chair
    conranshop.co.uk
Few designs have the legendary status and universal appeal of the Eames DSW chair. The original design, which was the very first industrially produced plastic chair, was jointly developed with Zenith Plastics for the ‘Low-Cost Furniture Design’ competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. The current version is made of recyclable dyed-through polypropylene to provide even greater comfort and durability. The solid wood and wire base with cross struts features rubber shock mounts to support longer periods of sitting down. With its simple organic shape, the Eames DSW chair now seems like an archetype of the genre of chairs whose shell can be combined with diverse bases. The selection of bases makes it possible to use the chairs in a wide variety of settings: from the dining room or home office to the garden. Shells come in a broad range of colours and upholstery versions, so that components can be mixed and matched to find the perfect chair for individual needs. View our entire range of Eames furniture. Dimension: 46.5cm (w) x 81cm (h) x 55cm (d); Seat height: 41cm; Seat depth: 46.5.

The molded plastic seats are produced of ecologically friendly, recyclable polypropylene. New materials, especially those that held promise for doing more with less, fascinated the Eameses thoughout their careers. Plastic was no exception. they saw in it the chance to form organic seat shells that conform to the body's shape. The Eameses adapted manufacturing techniques developed during World War II to mass-produce this design in side and armchair versions. As they typically did, the Eameses required that materials be expressed honestly and unselfconsciously so these were the first one-piece plastic chairs offered without upholstery or covering. Their enduring design and quality construction make them durable performers in many environments. With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team.
