A Victorian doll depicting Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Hungary (Sisi), gowned in her preferred dark, riding habit-inspired court apparel, long about 1883.

Sisi is reported to have suffered from severe eating disorders for much of her life -- which, for many women, comes about because it gives them the only control they can find in lives governed by domineering others. This was almost certainly the case for Sisi. Though she was at times an unhappy and neurotic woman, she nonetheless managed to become an icon in her time because of her skill with words, her increasing wilfulness, her impressive athleticism, and her formidable intelligence.
