elizabeth of york was the daughter of edward iv and elizabeth woodville. when her father died, elizabeth's life was thrown into turmoil. her brothers, edward v and richard of shrewsbury, more commonly known as the princes in the tower, were murdered, and she and her sisters were forced to remain in sanctuary for the reign of richard iii.
during this time, elizabeth's mother formed an alliance with lady margaret beaufort, the mother of future king henry vii. should henry succeed in removing richard from the throne, henry would marry elizabeth of york, ending the civil wars between yorkists and the lancastrians.
henry destroyed richard iii at the battle of bosworth field, and was crowned king of england shortly thereafter. he and elizabeth were married, and the couple had four surviving children, the most notorious of them was, of course, king henry viii.
elizabeth features in sharon kay penman's "the sunne in splendour" and in philippa gregory's "the white queen." however, it's rumored that philippa gregory will come out with a new book solely on elizabeth of york, which will be entitled "the white princess."
