  • Philippe Starck Emeco Stool Seat Pad - Vinyl
    dwr.com
After updating the iconic 1006 seat by Emeco for the Hudson Hotel in New York City, Philippe Starck took on the Emeco Counter and Barstools, stripping the classics of their back and arms and giving them an irresistably slender profile. Simple, elegant and commodious for bodies of all sizes, the stools contain up to 80% recycled aluminum and are handcrafted to be stronger than steel using the same proprietary 77-step process as the classic 1006 Navy Collection. First designed as prototypes for the Mies van der Rohe retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 2001, the Bar and Counter Stools are solutions that the museum thought Mies van der Rohe himself might choose today. Made available to the public in 2002 and equipped with optional vinyl seat pads, they have a cool neutrality right for any environment, artfully blending contemporary crispness with the contours of '50s modernism. The optional Seat Pad, in black, is made of vinyl and is easily cleaned with a damp cloth.
  • Emeco 1006 Navy® Counter Stool with Arms in Brushed Finish
    dwr.com
Legend has it that Emeco founder Wilton Dinges tested the strength of a 1006 Navy Chair (1944) by tossing it out a sixth-story window. The people on the sidewalk below were a bit surprised, but the chair was fine, with the exception of a few scratches. Today, Emeco still uses the same 77-step process that Dinges perfected 70 years ago to satisfy the military’s need for lightweight, corrosion-resistant chairs for destroyers and submarines. The company’s proprietary metal processing method yields aluminum three times stronger than steel – and a chair so durable that it has an estimated life span of 150 years. Emeco’s all-aluminum chairs and stools come with a lifetime guarantee, and generations from now, when your great-great-grandchildren finally manage to wear out a chair that’s tested to withstand 1,700 pounds of weight (big kids), the aluminum can be fully recycled and made into something else. Stainless steel foot caps are covered with clear plastic glides to prevent floor scratches and carpet snags. Stool with brushed finish is suitable for outdoor use. This is the authentic 1006 Navy Stool by Emeco. Made in U.S.A. Made from 80% recycled aluminum (40% post-consumer, 40% post-industrial), which requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce virgin aluminum. In continuous production since 1944.

The philosophy “less is more” embossed the designs by Ludvig Mies van der Rohe. Philippe Starck however, also used that approach when he designed the Stool for Emeco: The barstool is formally simple and clever at the same time and it even completely represents the Bauhaus tradition. Terence Riley chose the Emeco Bartool also for the MoMA in New York, since the curator of the “Mies Vam der Rohe in Berlin”-exposition believed that the stool could as well have been designed by the Bauhaus manager: A simple and timeless design connected to a manufacturing which survives complete generations. The Emeco Barstool is manufactured in a complicated handwork procedure. This has for a consequence that the stool doesn’t only consist of the highest quality, is longevity and robust, but that also every specimen is unique. The Emeco Barstool by Philippe Starck is also available as Counter Stool (H 61 cm) and as stool (H 46 cm).
