Design Charles & Ray Eames®, 1969. Aluminum, upholstery. Made by Herman Miller® "Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purpose." -Charles Eames. An extension of the Aluminum Group chairs designed in 1958 for the Irwin Miller home, the Soft Pad Group repeats the structure of the earlier chairs, adding cushions to the seat and back. Covered in leather or fabric, these cushions transformed the spare character of the Aluminum Group into a luxurious version for homes and offices. The seat-back suspension was a major technical achievement and represented a departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell. The soft pad group is wonderfully comfortable, strong, yet lightweight. With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look." Available in management, side, executive, and lounge models, their classic lines and comfortable suspension keep them in demand for all kinds of places, from contemporary homes to elegant offices to hip startups. The executive chair features a high back with arms, a lightweight aluminum frame and 2"-thick upholstered foam cushions. It has a 5-star base with casters, tilt-swivel mechanism and seat-height adjustment (regular or pneumatic). hivemodern.com
Design Charles & Ray Eames®, 1969. Aluminum, upholstery. Made by Herman Miller® "Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purpose." -Charles Eames. Charles and Ray Eames designed the Eames executive chairs in 1960 to grace the lobbies that they designed for the Time-Life Building in New York City. That's why some people call them Time-Life chairs. They were developed to meet the need for a comfortable chair that was smaller than the Eames lounge chair. In 1972, chess grand master Bobby Fischer specifically requested the Eames executive chair while he competed in the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland. He said he could concentrate well in the chair. When opponent Boris Spaasky saw it, he refused to play until he got one, too. That was and is the "Eames look." Exceptionally generous in size, the Eames executive chair features 4.5" thick cushions in the seat, 3" cushions for the back, padded arms along with seat height and tilt swivel options for added adjustability - unmistakable hallmarks of a chair steeped in rich tradition as well as elegant comfort. The 111 Navy Chair is the result of the Emeco and Coca-Cola Company collaboration. Both companies have combined their classic products to this new chair, the Navy Chair on the one hand and nonreturnable bottles on the other one. The main idea from the 111 Navy Chair is to recycle: every 111th Navy Chair from Emeco is made of approximately 111 recycled Coke bottles, therefore its name. Adjacent to the 60% recycled nonreturnable bottles; the Navy Chair is also composed of materials such as fibreglass that act as an additional steadiness factor. The 111 Navy Chair shows that recycling mustn’t necessarily be the reuse of waste, it shows that from second hand products, new products can emerge, that involve high quality and great design without being inferior to the competition. The 111 Navy Chair design is based on Emeco’s classic 1944 Navy Chair 1006. The chair was the headstone for Emeco’s success. With the 111 Navy Chair, Emeco and Coca Cola transformed something that people throw away in something long lasting. To support recycling is Emeco’s and Coca-Cola’s collective goal. Design Noe Duchaufour-Lawrance, 2013. Upholstery, polished aluminum base. Made in USA by Bernhardt Design. Chiara, by Parisian designer Noe Duchaufour-Lawrance, is a response to a world that can't stop talking. "Our personal and professional worlds have blurred together. Technology and media are ubiquitous. Chiara lounge chair is a refuge from our overstimulated world," says Duchaufour-Lawrance. For the seat, Duchaufour-Lawrance drew from the shapes of flower petals and leaves. As a result, the chair cradles without enveloping you. Chiara is at once supportive, but not restrictive. As a modern lounge piece, Chiara's generous open seat swivels and allows you to use the chair in different ways. Chiara is meant to adjust to your needs, rather than dictate how it is to be used. In a world screaming for our attention, Chiara stands out with its invitation to rest, listen and reflect. Born in South France, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance is a designer of objects and interior environments. Following in the footsteps of his father, a sculptor, his artistic interests developed at an early age. Growing up in this creative atmosphere, he had the opportunity to define his own language: using natural shapes with smooth and organic lines which remain fluid and structured at the same time. After earning a degree in Metal Sculpture from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art, he studied furniture design at the renowned Les Arts Décoratifs. Chiara is fully upholstered in your choice of textile with a polished aluminum self-return swivel base. 33" W | 29" d | 29" h | seat: 16.5" h.

  • Emeco - 111 Navy Coca-Cola Chair
    connox.com
Both companies home to produce 111 Navy Chairs with three million nonreturnable bottles a year.

Design Verner Panton, 1959. Laminated body, foam, upholstery, stainless steel. Made in Germany by Vitra. "Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using color. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting." -Verner Panton. Verner Panton's career as a designer first peaked at the end of the 1950's. With a series of furniture featuring basic geometrical shapes he pre-empted Pop Art ideas and yet with the base frames clearly adopted the elegance of Scandinavian Modernism. With the C1 armchair created around the same time, Verner Panton for the first time chose a section of a sphere. On swivel bearings and slightly tilted, the upholstered seat shell is astonishingly comfortable-both for relaxed sitting, leaning back and for upright sitting. The C1 can be integrated into private apartments, hotels or reception areas, cuts a fine figure in larger groups, and can be complimented by the matching stool. As one of the most influential and remarkable designers of the era, Verner Panton has created objects, spaces and art. His original, space age designs have won numerous awards and been exhibited in museums and private collections around the world. His ideaologies and design concepts are apparent and have had great influence on 21st century design. Chair: 29" h | 26" w | 22.75" d.

Made by Herman Miller® Ten years and over 1.5 million chairs later, Studio 7.5 believed it was time to evaluate and rethink their original design of the Mirra chair. For one thing, they noted, work is evolving. People move, and the more they're in motion, the more they need support that moves with them. As work evolves, and we become more active, flexing from individual to collaborative work in an instant, Mirra 2 moves with you, at one with your body. When you sit, Mirra 2 adapts to you instantly.
