This lithograph is a beautiful, rich interpretation of a famous painting by Léger, which was published by Fernand Mourlot in honor of the artist. Léger sought to express the noise, dynamism and speed of new technology and machinery, working through several themes, or cycles, of imagery depicting humans in motion. Lithograph on Arches paper, 1956. Limited quantity. Numbered in pencil lower right. Transitional black frame with subtle silver brush strokes. 8-ply soft white archival mat. Tru Vue Conservation Clear® glass. Artist Biography. Léger was a draftsman, illustrator, printmaker, stage designer, filmmaker, and ceramicist. In his early works, he created a personal form of Cubism, which he gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a forerunner of pop art. His mature work underwent many changes, from Cubist-derived abstraction in the 1910s to distinctive realist imagery in the 1950s.

Estève was influenced by Léger and Bonnard, but in later years, the Surrealist and Abstract Expressionist movements captured his attention. His stylized figure, still life, and landscape compositions with strong colors gradually became completely abstract, with tight-knit interlocking shapes in rich, bold colors. His paintings established a new pictorial language: lyrical abstractions with the aim of depicting form and color with an almost poetic attitude. Lithographic poster, 1974. Limited quantity. Transitional black frame with subtle silver brush strokes. 8-ply soft white archival mat. Tru Vue Conservation Clear® glass. Artist Biography. Estève was an abstract painter and a central figure of Tachism. He was born in Culan. His family moved to Paris in 1913. He worked for a year as designer in a textile factory in Barcelona, and he later attended the free course at the Académie Colarossi where he studied the works of Fouquet and Uccello in the Louvre and particularly admired Cézanne. Estève took part in the Venice Biennale in 1954, and his works are established in most major art museums.

It was a confluence of influences that encouraged Picasso to lend his figures more weight and structure around 1906. And they ultimately set him on the path towards Cubism, in which he deconstructed the conventions of perspectival space that had dominated painting since the Renaissance. These innovations would have far-reaching consequences for practically all of modern art, revolutionizing attitudes to the depiction of form in space. Lithographic poster, 1970. Limited quantity. Transitional black frame with subtle silver brush strokes. 8-ply soft white archival mat. Tru Vue Conservation Clear® glass. Artist Biography. Picasso was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet, and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. A major theme running through Lanskoy's work is the interaction of form and color. He breaks the subject to make it disappear in large solid colors and light refractions. Lanskoy's lyrical and dynamic abstract compositions were a revelation in a climate dominated by cold geometric abstraction, and although he refused to be categorized, he was an important forerunner of Tachism. Lithograph on Arches paper, c.1965. Limited quantity. Signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. Traditional silver frame. 8-ply ivory archival mat. Tru Vue Conservation Clear® glass. Artist Biography. Lanskoy was a painter and printmaker who is associated with the post-War school of lyrical abstract painting called "Tachism." He was born Andrei Michailovitch Lanskoyin, son of Comte Lanskoy, in Moscow and fought in the Tsarist White Army during the Russian Revolution. Lanskoy left Russia afterwards, moving to Paris in 1921. He studied at the famously progressive Académie de la Grande Chaumière, painting portraits and still lifes in vivid colors with thick applications of paint, inspired by Vincent van Gogh and Chaïm Soutine. After 1942, he began to paint exclusively abstract works.

The illustrative quality of Magritte's pictures often results in a powerful paradox: images that are beautiful in their clarity and simplicity but also provoke unsettling thoughts. They seem to declare that they hide no mystery, and yet they are also marvelously strange. Magritte was fascinated by the interactions of textual and visual signs, and some of his most famous pictures employ both words and images. Lithograph on Arches paper, 1950. Limited quantity. Annotated and stamped by the Mourlot Estate. Traditional gold frame. 8-ply ivory archival mat. Tru Vue Conservation Clear® glass. Artist Biography. Magritte was a painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, photographer, and filmmaker. He was one of the major figures of Surrealism and perhaps the greatest Belgian artist of the 20th century. Just as Magritte was achieving success and recognition, World War II broke out. Although he continued to develop his signature style, he also increasingly deployed a bright, impressionistic palette as a subversive response to the bleakness of the war. By the end of his life, he enjoyed great success, and there were six major retrospectives of his œuvre in the 1960s alone.
