Atlanta-based industrial designer Chris Hardy, who made his design debut at Salone del Mobile in 2011, created the sculptural Helix Coffee Table (2012) for DWR. He gave it an odd number of legs and positioned the brass castings to radiate out from the center, resulting in a distinctive asymmetrical form that looks different from every angle. “For Helix, I was inspired by the challenge of personalization in the modern world, and the increasing desire that we have to own objects that match our own styles and philosophies – in the way that art does,” explains Hardy. Made by hand, the cast brass base has a natural finish that’s soft and not highly polished; minor pitting and irregularities in the brass are typical of the casting process and are not defects. Thick and durable, the annealed glass tabletop is slowly cooled in a kiln to relieve internal stresses after it’s formed. Leveling glides adjust for uneven floors. Simple assembly required; no tools necessary. Base made in India; tabletop made in U.S.A.

  • Terence Woodgate Unison Side Table
    dwr.com
British industrial designer Terence Woodgate is a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI), the highest honor awarded to designers in the U.K. He’s known for his obsessive attention to detail, which is beautifully illustrated in his Unison Table (2011). Visually simple, this two-tier table is actually quite complex in its design. In place of fasteners and external hardware, Unison uses a lower shelf as the structural component to hold the legs firmly in position. Its glass tabletop rests on neoprene pads, and Woodgate had to be sure to get the weight just right to make the pads grip sufficiently. Visible through the tabletop is the lower shelf with exquisitely cut half-sawn wood veneer. Made in Slovenia.

  • Normann Copenhagen Box Side Table
    shophorne.com
Industrial, simple, and versatile. Box is a small table with a lightweight feel. The steel material makes it strong and gives the table a durable expression. The industrial design of the table is accentuated by its simple, orthogonal construction and stylish framework. With Box, Danish designer Peter Johansen wanted to make a steel table with right angles as the bearing design principle for both the tabletop and legs. The designer has taken advantage of the fact that material is strengthened when a piece of metal is bent and created a solid table with a unique look. One of the fine details is the rounded edges that soften up the table's sharp lines. It is natural for Peter Johansen to use his hands for bringing ideas to life. His designs are typically created using 1:1 scaling. He then modifies and fine-tunes the proportions of the design. Peter Johansen says: "I had a clear picture of the table in my head right from the beginning. So the design process was more about finding the exact proportions. Even though the Box Table is made of steel, it has a light feel. Just like when two pieces of paper are glued together. And it is precisely the interaction between the thin lines and the strong material that create a nice contrast." Box is available in two sizes, three shades of blue, a cream, and a classic grey. The table useful for many purposes, for example, as a coffee table, side table, or bedside table. The table has handles, which makes it easy to move around.

  • Moebius Table

We discovered the Moebius Table (2006) in Parma, Italy, but with its endless looping base and delicately suspended glass surface, it defies national boundaries. The solid walnut foundation flares and narrows in six arcs, creating a look of poised animation. Each upright is accented by brass hardware and serves as a balance point for the thick glass top. The name was inspired by August Ferdinand Möbius, the German astronomer and mathematician who first published the discovery of the Möbius strip – a two-dimensional surface with only one side. To construct a model of it, take a rectangular piece of paper, give it a half twist and then tape its ends together. The resulting shape has one continuous curve – a bit like the base of Moebius. Reminiscent of the iconic Noguchi® Table, this piece is a classic in its own right, blending rhythmic form with straightforward function. Simple assembly required. Made in Malaysia.

  • Normann Copenhagen Ding Table
    shophorne.com
Inspired by ancient three-dimensional wooden brain teaser puzzles, the German designers Ding3000 have created a simple coffee table that is assembled without the help of screws and tools. The table consists quite simply of three legs made from oak. When put together they constitute a sculptural knot that works as the base for an exclusive glass table top. When Ding3000 purchased the puzzles they immediately began to experiment and play with the shape and the puzzle's basic principle: three pieces of wood join together and lock themselves in a seemingly inseparable knot. During the process, it dawned on them that the form would make a perfect base for a table top. The legs are rounded off with chamfered edges, making the table stand sturdily on the floor and the round sheet of glass sit solidly on the base. The three legs seem to pierce through each other in an impossible way, and our intention is to draw attention to this almost magical detail. That is also why we have chosen a transparent top, so the table's key focus point is the joining of the legs. The Ding table is available with either a clear or smoked glass table top, and with a choice of three different types of legs, there is ample opportunity to find exactly the style that suits your furnishings and taste. For example, you can combine a clear glass table top with legs in natural for a clean and Nordic expression, or turn up the intensity with a smoked table top in bold coral-colored or striking black legs.
