One of the comments I used to get most when telling people that I an vegetarian or moving towards a vegan diet is: "But meat (cheese) is SOOOOO tasty."

When I first gave up meat, I had to agree. As someone raised eating it--in fact, someone for whom meat was a reward or celebration (think Thanksgiving turkey, Easter ham or going out for filet mignon as a treat), I couldn't argue that particular point. I didn't give up eating meat because I didn't like the taste. In fact, that would've made life easier. I gave it up because I felt it was wrong to kill and consume the life of another when it wasn't a necessity for me.

Now, the same can be said for fashion. I didn't give up wearing leather shoes or suede boots, etc., because I thought they were ugly (although honestly I never could stand the odor).

Today, after more than 20 years without eating it, I can't stand the smell of meat and doubt I'd like the taste, and genuine leather and fur, stripped off a living being, makes me sad, angry and uncomfortable. Having said that, it doesn't mean that a leather-look skirt, suedette-like shoes or a vegan leather satchel are unattractive. Vegetarians and vegans can still enjoy the style of these fashionable items when the labels said "all man-made materials." Animal print wardrobe items and accessories can pay homage to the lovely creatures they represent without causing harm.

Cozy sweaters are another trend in fall (surprise, surprise!) and were the inspiration behind this set. Like the faux leather skirt, soft and cozy sweaters can be enjoyed without the inclusion of wool, angora, alpaca or other animal fibers.

Of course, if you're wearing a look like this and some sarcastic naysayer says "What a hypocrite--saying you're vegetarian/vegan and wearing leather, you can exclaim in delight how amazing it is that manmade materials--vegan leather and suede as well as faux fur--have come in simulating or emulating 'the look' of the real thing without killing."

And THAT is compassion over killing and compassion in fashion.
