332: Feedsack Dresses
During WWII there was a shortage of cotton fabric. Feed sacks were collected and recycled. Thrifty women would use feed sacks to make clothing for their children, aprons, diapers, dish towels, and even quilts. Mill manufacturers decided to boost sales, they would make feed and flour sacks in attractive fabric patterns to make their products more desirable. Contests were held for women to show off their skills. It took several feed sacks to complete some projects so woman collected and traded patterns until they had enough to complete their sewing projects. Women also sold surplus bags as a source of income to aid in running the home.
