Dedicated to @shedgy, whose March birthday I missed, and who loves vintage as much as I do.
Once upon a time (in February 1950, to be precise), a new magazine was born. It was named “Flair” and its editor was Fleur Cowles. It was called “outrageously beautiful”… but it lasted only one year. It was simply too expensive to produce. Priced at 50 cents a copy, not only did the magazine fail to meet its costs… it actually LOST 2.5 million dollars in its first (and last) 12 months.
But wait. There’s more. In 1952, Fleur Cowles published the hardback “Flair 1953,” a collection of the best articles from the now-defunct magazine. She planned to release a new hardback every year… but, alas, “Flair 1953” was the only one that made it into print.
Copies of “Flair 1953” are still floating around; I just purchased one on alibris.com. I can’t wait to read it. If you want to know more about the fascinating and multifaceted Fleur, who died in 2009 at the age of 101, follow this link: http://www.vanityfair.com/magazine/archive/1996/10/fleur-cowles199610
