  • Bernard Schottlander Mantis BS1 B Floor Lamp
    dwr.com
Born in Mainz, Germany, in 1924, Bernard Schottlander fled to England as a Jewish refugee in 1939. He worked as a welder for a short stint during the war before delving into sculpture at Leeds College of Art and the Anglo-French art center in St. John’s Wood. A year later, he went on to open his own design studio and began creating new pieces in limited editions. An admirer of Alexander Calder, the American sculptor perhaps best known as originator of the mobile, Schottlander created his Mantis Collection (1951) as an homage. Movement being intrinsic to his work, he devised clever adjustable frames constructed of strong yet flexible steel rods combined with counterweights. He then fabricated shades from aluminum using repoussé and chasing techniques, relying on his trained sculptor’s eye to produce beautifully flowing shapes that set the symmetrical and asymmetrical in opposition. His lamps – much like his idol’s mobiles – appear to defy gravity with their floating forms. Bulb (not included): LED, CFL or incandescent; E12 base; 40W max. This is the authentic Mantis Collection. Made in China.

  • Foscarini Orbital Floor Lamp
    hivemodern.com
Design Ferruccio Laviani, 1992. Lacquered metal, glass. Made in Italy by Foscarini. The Orbital was Ferruccio Laviani's debut lamp. It marked Foscarini's first adoption of production materials other than Murano glass; but above all it constituted a long-standing icon which reinforced the company's image, particularly in the media. A piece of sculpture, Orbital is made of a metal stem and supported by an adjustable metal tripod, on which the five supports for the glass shades are soldered. Initially, the glass shades were to be reminiscent of stained glass cathedral windows. They are made out of industrial glass, silk-screened in white or different colors, and satin finished on the outer surface and polished on the inside to allow light reflection. As an architect and designer, Ferruccio Laviani works in the fields of furnishing and accessories, industrial communication, exhibition, event and show room installation. He has worked with a variety of companies worldwide. In 1992, the collaboration between Laviani and Foscarini began and it has continued since, with the research of new shapes and materials. His contemporary style is hallmarked by a particular sign or color. Available in your choice of white or colored glass shades. 20.75" dia. | 67" h | requires 5x40W E12 candelabra type G16,5 frosted incandescents.

Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed the Table and Floor Lamp Taccia for Flos in 1958. Today the classic gleams with ultramodern LED-technology. In an interview of 1970, the grand old master Achille Castiglioni said about the Taccia: "For us, this lamp is the Mercedes-Benz among luminaire; a symbol of success, possibly because the socket looks like an ancient pillar. However, when we designed the Taccia Lamp, prestige was not in the focus at all. Moreover, the main focus was basically on a surface that remains cool". The conception of Taccia was created by the Castiglionis in 1958 and the prototype was released just a year later. However, before the actual launch date for the start of the Tacchia lamp series production was given, the manufacturer Flos took a long time to proof the design. This was a wise decision because up to now the lamp of Flos shines - in the meantime even available in an energy-saving Taccia LED version. The reflector of the Taccia table and floor lamp has a gloss white finish inside and white powder-coated outside. The adjustable diffusor consists of mouth-blown transparent glass, the lamp body is made of matte black or anodized silver extruded aluminum. The base consists of nickel-plated and zapon-varnished polished steel. Switching on and off takes place via a switch on the electric cable. This light classic provides indirect and reflected light as well as an adjustable glass diffusor: The LED illuminant in the socket lights up the inside of the reflector plate which reflects the light in the desired direction. Despite its unusual way of producing light, the Taccia LED is suitable or a variety of purposes: Either as a desk lamp for working matters, on the chest of drawers in the living or bedroom as an ambient lighting or mood illuminant, or even as a floor lamp for illuminating the floor directly, e.g. Thereby it lights up corridors.
