About the Designer Vico Magistretti Italy (1920 - 2006) Vico Magistretti began designing at the end of the 40s, but spent most of the 50s involved in architecture. He then returned to design (by far the majority being furniture) at the end of the 50s and has continued since then. He was educated in a time of architectural rationalism and so was taught to think logically, a lot of importance being placed on using architecture to solve social problems. In particular; the use of pre-fabrication was advocated. He was always more involved in industrial design for mass production than in one off pieces, but unlike some similar products, he designed his furniture to last. This all leads to his designs tending to be simple but effective solutions to a problem. However, he kept them quite informal by adding a bit of fun; perhaps this was a natural reaction against the austerity of wartime conditions. Although this is all true, he managed to make his designs innovative and stylish with elegant lines and quality finishes. Magistretti remained consistent in his approach to his work, but continued to react to current trends and issues and was always willing to test new materials and come up with new solutions. His designs have contributed significantly to the success of Italian design. The Design This graceful Vico Magistretti creation is an elegant chair for use in any environment. • Eero Saarinen Saarinen Executive Side Chair with Metal Legs in Leather
    dwr.com
The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Side Chair (1946) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at the MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men; for Saarinen, most notably in his Womb, Tulip and Executive chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter and the contoured plywood seat supported by metal or wood legs. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair. This chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified; for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A.

  • Mater Shell Lounge Chair - Brown Saddle Leather, Soaped Oak
    shophorne.com
The Shell Chair is developed out of Michael Dreebens ongoing interest in traditional craft practices in North India - in this case saddle making. Exquisitely made saddles have been produced in India for centuries, and although some horse culture persists, it's waning as India becomes more technologically developed. The Shell Chairs attempt to incentivize this skilled trade by providing these artisans with a new market for their craft, and hopefully encouraging them to pass it on to younger generations. The shape of the chair is an homage to Scandinavian design of the mid-twentieth century and embraces some of its core values: it's clean of line and is intended to emphasize the leather forming and stitching, it's deeply comfortable, and it's durable – like the saddles it's derived from, it's crafted from thick, top-grain leather, and with reasonable care, will last for decades. Frame: Soaped Oak. Leather: Premium brown saddle leather

The internationally famous, Spanish designer Jaime Hayon designed the armchair of the future together with Fritz Hansen. An armchair, which offers relaxation and a little time-out for you, away from the stressful day by day. Time to think is luxury nowadays. We all have a lot of work and hardly time to stop and think a little while. The Ro armchair from Fritz Hansen comes from the desire of furniture which will make us stop running for a moment. Ro is more than an armchair. It has 1½ seats, to relax in them, to find a comfortable position in it, to read newspapers or to configure the computer or spend time with the children - a new comfort zone. The design of the seat is simple, elegant and pleasant for the eyes and the body. In its visual expression and the comfortable functionality, Ro guarantees quietness and relaxation. Moreover the clever shape of the seat makes it possible for you to decide whether to be part of what’s happening in the room you’re in or to enter your own small comfort zone. The design premises of Fritz Hansen for the designer Jaime Hayon said that he should create "a comfortable seat for single persons”. ”We focussed on the shape of the armchair, which is inspired by the human body. Our aim was to create an armchair which would be as comfortable as beautiful. I wanted to create a slim, elegant armchair to think and sit comfortably”, explained Jaime Hayon. "Ro” means quietness on Danish. This name was chosen because it describes the character of the armchair with only two characters and which perfectly expresses the Scandinavian concept for aesthetics that way. The Ro armchair is made by Fritz Hansen according to the highest quality and processing standards. The result of this unique interplay of sculptural and elegant design is a functional and aesthetically appealing armchair, which attracts glimpses in every environment. One can only fall in love with it, since Ro doesn’t compromise in comfort or aestheticism. The relax armchair is available in nine colours: in three traditional colours (black, grey and taupe), in three shiny colours (violet, blue and yellow) and in three soft colours (light pink, sage green and sand). The armchair has different surface structures for the seat and the upholstery for a more dynamic appearance, emphasizing the contrast between the hard outside and the warm, softer inside.

Minuscule is a chair, which impresses with its withdrawing, Scandinavian style. This designer’s piece made by Cecilie Manz fits in different rooms without any problems. The name "Minuscule” was chosen by Fritz Hansen and the Danish designer Cecilie Manz, since the chair represents unconstrained, decent style, which also characterizes Danish design in general. The also clever and uncomplicated Minuscule chair is characterized by its material: The chair connects tradition and craftsmanship with industrial processing. The seat is upholstered with a weightless but durable fabric and hand-sewn, whereby a fine leather detail emphasizes its contours. The aesthetically swung bowls are held by a frame out of plastic. This material is a contrast and also a pleasant, contemporaneous completion of the whole image. The source of inspiration for the design details: stones that floated through the sea, reaching the beach. The soft lines of the frame also have that softness. The upholstery of the outside bowl is available in two grey tones as well as in black/white. Grey is a colour which fascinates Cecilie Manz a lot, since it is the only tone that is able to absorb all the other ones. The different colours of the bowl are combinable with different upholsteries as well. The possible colour combinations of backside and upholstery of seat are represented in the document below.
