Love is in the air as a couple of birds are carried in a palanquin to their marriage ceremony in this patachitra painting by Mamoni Chitrakar. The Indian artist starts by preparing the colors from natural dyes obtaining a palette of bright colors that capture the festive spirit of the occasion. She then paints on paper which she pastes on cotton fabric recycled from saris. The word pata is derived from the Sanskrit and Pali word meaning cloth and chitra means picture. Patachitra means picture painted on cloth and it refers to a storytelling tradition originating in the Medinipur region of West Bengal. The painter community is called Patua and all of the artists bear the same last name Chitrakar meaning painter. Through this unique art form the bard presents the story with pictures while simultaneously narrating a song called Pater Gaan. Patuas use colors extracted from various trees leaves fruits flowers seeds and clay. Traditionally their themes revolved around mythological stories but the newer generations of Patuas paint about contemporary social issues ranging from violence against women to climate change. They are deftly capturing the changing times. Patachitra artists once had a unique style of presenting their craft: they would go to different villages singing and telling the stories within the paintings with song and ethos to these themes. Interestingly despite the fact they all belonged to the Muslim community and practiced Islam faith they all painted about Hindu gods and goddesses and sang songs in their praise. They did not see their religious beliefs as a barrier to their craft.

1940s Original American Poster Shipscalers Union
America's shipscalers union, formed by the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), arose out of the four day, 1934 labor strike up and down the West Coast, which shut down ports from San Diego to Vancouver. A shipscalers tasks were among the most unglamorous, laborious, dirty and dangerous jobs on the docks. They were responsible for scraping barnacles off the undersides of ships in dry dock, painting the exteriors, cleaning soot out of boiler rooms and by some accounts also cleaning up debris from repair work in the holds. For this poster, advertising a union picnic in Lincoln Park, the image is as obscure as the artist. In a decidedly WPA style, the anonymous artist depicts a woman embracing a welding mask, while a man carries a basket of fruit and bottles. If the visual message is unclear the point of the poster is not; a chance for returning soldiers and laborers to get together and work towards further solidarity. An excellent American labor document.

Throughout Africa a rite of passage - be it child birth marriage or death - is accompanied by the playing of instruments mostly the drum and flute. The type of tune they play distinguishes one rite from the other. Child birth is the beginning of all the stages in the rites that is why a woman who cannot conceive is given an Akuaba doll as a symbol of fruitfulness. I used the Akuaba doll in the background as a sign of childbirth and the jubilation that accompanies it with the musicians playing the flute and drum explains Cherkoh. He paints with oils and masterfully outlines the musicians with dried plantain leaves creating a stunning composition.
