  • Knoll Saarinen Tulip Stool
    SOLD OUT: More info
Design Eero Saarinen, 1956. Aluminum base, upholstery. Made in USA by Knoll. In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. He designed the 1956 Tulip collection in terms of its setting, rather than a particular shape. "In any design problem, one should seek the solution in terms of the next largest thing." he said. "If the problem is a chair, then its solution must be found in the way it relates to the room..." In Tulip, Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award, the Tulip is Saarinen's genius solution to clearing up the "slum of legs" that populates the under-carriage of most dining sets. The Saarinen tulip stools are cast aluminum with a swivel base. There is a Rilsan coated finish for the black and white stools. Platinum stools consist of a high-resilient polyurethane enamel wet coat with a clear satin finish. The signature of Eero Saarinen is located on the underside of the base. 15.5" dia. | 16.5" h.

  • Le Corbusier LC8 Swivel Stool
    SOLD OUT: More info
The LC8 Swivel Stool (1928) represents the designer's interest in exploring the structural possibilities of tubular steel and was designed to mirror the (LC7) swivel chair. The LC7 Swivel Chair (1928) evolved from one of a number of experiments, including an attempt to fashion a chair by wrapping inner tubes from tires around a steel frame. As the Le Corbusier group refined such trials, a sensuous solution took form. A round, thickly padded seat rests on top of a curving claw-like base of tubular steel that resolves in a swivel mechanism, giving the seat pad a buoyant look. A curved, amply padded barrel, doubling as backrest and chair arms, links three tubular steels supports that fuse at the seat base. The result has become one of modernism’s most familiar icons. Each piece is signed and numbered and, as a product of Cassina’s Masters Collection, is manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy.

  • Harry Bertoia Bertoia Barstool With Seat Pad
    SOLD OUT: More info
With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art when Bertoia met Florence Knoll Bassett (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband Hans Knoll. The terms were favorable to the artist and Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda. The result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance that's supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. "If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture," said Bertoia. "Space passes through them." The white barstools and regular vinyl seat pads (black, carrot and white) can be used outdoors with proper care and limited exposure to the elements. Manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Barstool made in Italy, seat pads made in U.S.A. • Cappellini Knotted Chair
    SOLD OUT: More info
Design Marcel Wanders, 1996. Carbon, aramide fiber cord, epoxy. Made in Italy by Cappellini. Marcel Wanders appeals to the imagination because it realized the designer's age-old dream: making something soft and flat become rigid and three-dimensional by means of a couple of technical inventions. By a surprising marriage of handcraft and industrial technology this lightweight chair is born. The rope is made of an aramide braid and carbon center is knotted into the shape of the chair. The slack texture is then impregnated with epoxy and hung in a frame to harden. Gaudi revisited: gravity creates the final shape. The transparent appearance of the chair misleads you, the knotted fiber, which doesn't want to collapse looks strange, alien perhaps. The chair invites to touch and try. Despite all its modern technology there is a lovely doltishness, which brings out its individual and personal character. Some products are a forerunner, a come out to new inventions, materials and technolody. The Knotted chair is such a product. Marcel Wanders grew up in Boxtel, the Netherlands and graduated cum laude from the School of the Arts Arnhem in 1988. His fame started with the iconic Knotted Chair in 1996. He is now designing for the biggest European contemporary design manufacturers including Moooi of which he is also art director and co-owner. He works on architectural, interior design and consumer home appliances. His designs have been selected for the most important design collections and exhibitions around the world. 21" w | 25.25" d | 27.25" h | seat: 12.5" h.

    SOLD OUT: More info
Design Verner Panton, 1960. Injection molded polypropylene, matt surface. Made in Germany by Vitra. "Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using color. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting." -Verner Panton. The Panton Chair has always been a favorite of children. They not only like its bright, cheerful colors and smooth curves, but the fact that it is as much fun to play with as it is to sit on. Soon after its introduction, Verner Panton began to consider the idea of producing a child-size version of the chair together with Vitra. What was financially unfeasible over 35 years ago is now possible: Vitra introduces the Panton Junior, whose production is based on the original plans of Verner Panton. Identical to the regular model with regard to material and shape, the Panton Junior is approximately 25 percent smaller and available in seven different colors. This makes it an ideal chair for children in pre-school and primary grades. The Panton Chair has won various design awards world-wide and graces the collections of numerous renowned museums. Its expressive shape makes it a true 20th-century design icon. The chair offers great seating comfort thanks to the cantilever base, together with its shape and flexible materials. It can be used on its own or in groups and even outdoors. 14.75" w | 17.5" d | 24.75" h | seat: 13.75" h | 12.5" d. $145.00 + free shipping in the continental US.

Design Verner Panton, 1959. Laminated body, foam, upholstery, stainless steel. Made in Germany by Vitra. "Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using color. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting." -Verner Panton. Verner Panton's career as a designer first peaked at the end of the 1950's. With a series of furniture featuring basic geometrical shapes he pre-empted Pop Art ideas and yet with the base frames clearly adopted the elegance of Scandinavian Modernism. With the C1 armchair created around the same time, Verner Panton for the first time chose a section of a sphere. On swivel bearings and slightly tilted, the upholstered seat shell is astonishingly comfortable-both for relaxed sitting, leaning back and for upright sitting. The C1 can be integrated into private apartments, hotels or reception areas, cuts a fine figure in larger groups, and can be complimented by the matching stool. As one of the most influential and remarkable designers of the era, Verner Panton has created objects, spaces and art. His original, space age designs have won numerous awards and been exhibited in museums and private collections around the world. His ideaologies and design concepts are apparent and have had great influence on 21st century design. Chair: 29" h | 26" w | 22.75" d.
