From the moment Audrey Hepburn, as Princess Ann, kicks off her high heels in favor of flat espadrilles in the 1953 classic Roman Holiday, the shoes instantly take on an aura of effortless chic. Clearly, espadrilles are not a new trend; the shoes have basked in the sartorial spotlight since the 14th century, when they were reportedly first made in the Pyrenees! Screen siren Grace Kelly was photographed lounging in espadrilles on the set of To Catch A Thief in 1955, while just last year, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton wore L.K. Bennett's espadrille wedges the morning after her royal wedding. Indeed, every spring and summer, you can expect to see a number of stylesetters sporting the comfortable kicks with natural, braided rope soles. They've evolved over the years into a stylish warm-weather staple, which is why I'm highlighting them in this set.
