MASTERPIECES–a modern interpretation of an original silver hollowware design. MASTERPIECES is a contemporary take on a Søren Georg Jensen piece first created in 1960. Georg Jensen began as a silversmith workshop. The MASTERPIECES collection pays tribute to this legacy but updates the style and material to give it a current edge. The candlestick was originally created in 1960 as an altar candle for use in a modern Scandinavian-style church. The 2007 version is in stainless steel and holds two tapered candles–the effect is striking. The structure of the candleholder is in many ways an iconic example of clean-lined Danish design of the post-World War II era. An essential part of the story of Scandinavian design. MASTERPIECES–based on original Georg Jensen hollowware. Available for the first time since 1960. One of Georg Jensen’s greatest legacies was its development of functional, modern design during the post World War II period. The Danish designer Magnus Stephensen was a pioneer of this clean and unadorned style. Having studied in Japan, he brought the subtle aesthetic he learned abroad to the works he created for Georg Jensen. This candleholder is a wonderful example of his work. It combines a contemporary edge with superior craftsmanship. This striking candlestick was originally used on church altars. Today, it is the perfect way to add a dramatic touch to any room in your house. It is designed for thick candles (6-7cm). Please note matching candles (3592428, 3592422) are sold separately. • Søren Georg Jensen Candelabrum 1087
    georgjensen.com
In 1960 Søren Georg Jensen created a large candelabrum for the high alter of an ultra-modern Scandinavian church. Based on this he designed a smaller version in the same style with two statuesque columns with a semi-hollowed outer edge giving relief to the solid, straight lines of the candlestick. The silversmith starts out by making the two conical shaped tubes. The centrepiece is cut out and shaped from a flat piece of silver. Thereafter follows the patient work of fitting the three pieces together: The silversmith will work on the adjoining lines to make sure that they fit perfectly before soldering. The adjoining lines are quite long and placed so that the tiniest imperfection in the soldering will show immediately. Therefore it is of vast importance that the edges and the soldering are no less than perfect. This is important for the inside and the outside as you are able to see both once the opening is cut! After the soldering the silversmith will cut out the opening on the sides and the corners and work on the outer edges to get the right profile. The actual candleholders are separate pieces which are fitted and soldered on as the last pieces before the silversmith hands over the candelabrum to the polisher for the finishing process. Deisgn year: 1960. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 17.6 cm / 6.92 inches L: 13.3 cm / 5.23 inches W: 6.1 cm / 2.40 inches.

  • Harald Nielsen Candelabrum 278
    georgjensen.com
Candelabrum 278 is a good example of the simplicity that characterises Harald Nielsen’s designs. Nature is only present in a highly stylised form and decoration was used only to accentuate the form. Candelabrum 278 is an exquisite item with fine details that challenges the silversmith. For instance the curves at the top of the plateau must be filed perfectly; otherwise they will reveal even the tiniest inaccuracy when the beads, the leaves and arms are soldered on. The beautiful floating arms must have the exact same curve and they must be in perfect angle horizontally as well as vertically before they are soldered on. The slightest inaccuracy will result in a dripping candle. In the decoration underneath the candleholders you will see a small twig and a small bead. Though they are the smallest elements they are the final pieces to be soldered on as they require the least amount of heat. When these two pieces are soldered on the silversmith has to heat up the arms, the candleholders and the larger beads so that they all have the same temperature. The challenge is to heat up the pieces just enough to solder on the two final pieces. If the pieces are heated up too much the previous soldering will loosen up and the whole piece will fall apart. Design year: 1928. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 15.5 cm / 6.10 inches L: 20.2 cm / 7.95 inches W: 10.9 cm / 4.29 inches.

  • Sigvard Bernadotte Candlestick 855B
    georgjensen.com
Straight and ascetic, Candlestick 855B conveys a sense of pride. The simplified style with no other decoration than the lines of the ridges, the flutings, identifies Bernadotte as one of the first modern designers working with Georg Jensen Silversmithy. Neoclassical airs can also be discerned in the use of elements reminiscent of the stringent shapes and proportions of Antiquity, here the column. The stem of this candlestick is a tube which has been pulled through a so-called draw plate which makes the lines. The base is an assemblage of four individually made parts, and when the silversmith assembles them he/she must ensure that the soldering is perfectly smooth so that they are invisible on the final piece. The most challenging part of making this candlestick is the actual the joining of the base and the stem – a part that you hardly see because the rallying point is covered by the hollow stem. The challenge is that the slightest unevenness in the two parts and/or the soldering will result in the stem slanting and consequently a dripping candle. Unlike most other hollowware pieces the parts of this candlestick are polished before they are assembled. The reason for this is the design - the edges must stay very sharp and if the candlestick is assembled before being polished it will be almost impossible for the polisher to not hit the sharp edges due to the very high speed of the brushes on the grinding and polishing machine. Design year: 1938. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 25 cm / 9.84 inches Ø: 10.1 cm / 3.97 inches.

  • Georg Jensen Candelabrum 324
    georgjensen.com
Georg Jensen had an eminent sense of balancing each part of a design harmoniously in relation to the others forming an integrated piece which this candelabrum is an excellent example of. The rich ornamentation is concentrated to the corpus of the candelabrum and contrasted with the airy and energetic feeling of the arms, giving the exuberant design an elegant timeless freshness. The floral decorations evolve naturally from the forms - so to speak. The soft, carving arms resemble flower stalks and form poetical and playful patterns and the stylised grapes complete the top of the central pieces of the candelabrum. Candelabrum 324 is designed around the end of WW1 (1914-1918) - a very rich period where unprecedented abundance of money circulated, trade flourished everywhere and the Silversmithy had a record turnover. During these years Georg Jensen created more richly decorated silver pieces than normally seen from his side. The two-branch Candelabrum 324 has a touch of it – but it is even more distinct in the five-branch Candelabrum 383 from 1920. Candelabrum 324 is called the ‘Poppy’ candelabrum – so called because the body is actually shaped as the capsule of the ‘Poppy’ flower. The capsule is soldered together in two halves, the chaser will create the hammer marks and the different patterns on each piece before the silversmith puts it all together. The silversmith must be extremely careful and make sure that everything is measured up and in a perfect angle. The slightest obliquity will make the final piece look lopsided and the candles will drip! Design year: 1919. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 22 cm / 8.66 inches L: 25.7 cm / 10.11 inches W: 7.4 cm / 2.91 inches.
