  • Georg Jensen - Henning Koppel Pitcher
    connox.com
Georg Jensen - Henning Koppel Pitcher
The duck is slim now: Henning Koppel designed a serving pitcher (with the number 1,044) in the year 1952 for the legendary Danish silver smithy Georg Jensen that reminded of a fat duck in its form. Consequently it became popular under the name “the pregnant duck” and was considered an absolute design classic. Koppel was obviously influenced by himself when he shaped the “Pitcher” in 1965 – also if it is slimmer now, what makes it appear even nobler than its idol. The design breathes pure pride. The Georg Jensen Company revives the chic, initially silver designed piece now in stainless steel, together with other works from the “master of form”. And the pitcher does spectacularly underline this series, which is why the Henning Koppel objects advanced to become the embodiment of Scandinavian post-war design as New Look famous style with their mirror-flat polished surfaces and their asymmetrical lines. Henning Koppel died in 1981 – although his works are still highly up-to-date today.

    Georg Jensen - Barbry Tray
Not only to serve, but also as decoration: The tray of the Barbry collection by Georg Jensen embodies the New Nordic Design with clear, modern shapes. Behind the Barbry tray there is Scandinavian handicraft tradition, which was translated by the designer Aurélien Barbry into modernity. The chef’s knife is an all-rounder for food of all kinds. The handles of the Barbry tray are a little elevated at the sides, in order to hold the tray easier, even if the tray stands on a flat surface. Excellent quality is self-evident here again: The Danish manufacturer Georg Jensen produces the tray of the Barbry collection out of oak wood. Suitable as serving tray or for decoration purpose – the tray suits both of the functions with its reduced and still shapes. The tray by Georg Jensen is even more special combined with other objects of the Barbry collection: The material contrasts of oak wood and stainless steel make up exciting effects, which always act harmonic and matching each other because of the common design of the Barbry series.

    Harald Nielsen PYRAMID creamer 600A
Creamer 600A is part of the pyramid coffee and tea set. The elements are based on geometric shapes: The ball, the triangle, the circle and straight lines. The lines are slightly curved, the profiles are accentuated, and the leaf underneath the jug’s handle accentuates the sweep of its arch. The Pyramid design belongs to the Art Déco style, which was an international style of design and architecture. The form language of Art Déco favoured the basic structures of geometry like the cube, the triangle and the circle. The inspiration came from various free art movements like Dada’s machine aesthetic, Cubism’s geometrical approach and Surrealism’s interest in the subconscious. The spectacular discovery of the virtually intact tomb of King Tutankhamen in Egypt also influenced the Art Déco style with motifs from the Egyptian furniture and pyramids. The shape of this service is a challenge to the silversmith. Silver is a very lively material when it is heated and especially when the top of the pot is soldered on it is vital that the top part is kept at an even temperature all the time. Otherwise, the silver will bend out of shape. Design year: 1930. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 5.2 cm / 2.04 inches Ø: 10 cm / 3.93 inches.

It was with inspiration from the form of cherry blossoms in full bloom that designer Helle Damkjær created the popular Bloom series. “My studio is based in Paris, one of Europe’s most vibrant metropolises. To challenge and contrast the inspirations I find in Europe, I enjoy travelling to the Far East to be inspired by Asia’s unique landscapes and natural forms. I was in Japan in the springtime and witnessed the overwhelming beauty of the cherry blossoms in full bloom. The delicate and soft contours of the cherry blossom’s form inspired me to create Bloom” Helle Damkjær states. The Bloom bowls are produced in stainless steel and are both suited for presenting delicious foods and for decorating any table. Design year: 2012. Matierals: Stainless steel, mirror polished. Sugar bowl 1017 is part of the Henning Koppel tea and coffee set from 1952. The Teapot 1017 was awarded the Gold Medal at the Triennial di Milano in 1954. Guaiacum is a very hard type of wood, which is needed due to the large size and special shape of the handles. Each handle is made especially for the individual pot and creamer. The socket (the small piece where the handle is attached) may vary slightly from pot to pot - it may be only a 1/10 of a millimetre – but still each handle must be fitted specifically for the individual pot. The fitting of the hinge for the lid on the coffee and tea pot is a very time consuming process for the silversmith. The transition from the handle to the lid has to be perfectly smooth, simultaneously the lid must open and close smoothly – not too tight and not too loose! Design year: 1952. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 4.2 cm /1.65 inches Ø: 10.7 cm / 4.21 inches.
