First designed in 1947, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp Collection has stood the test of time. The simple structural shapes with the innovative use of taut plastic over fine steel wire were born from George Nelson's frustration to buy a Swedish-made silk lamp which produced a soft light. This unique use of shape and material produces a diffused light that is free of glare while offering an abundance of illumination. These pieces are part of the permanent collection in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and remain icons in modern lighting. Modernica discovered these designs and reintroduced the series in 1989 with a dedication to reproducing these stunning, classic lights with authenticity and craftsmanship. Modernica still uses the same materials and methods to hand craft each piece in their Michigan facility. The George Nelson Bubble Light Cigar Floor Lamp is built to become a family heirloom. The brushed nickel plated steel frame has a weighted brushed steel or walnut covered base. The Lamp is available in three sizes with a 9 foot cord and easy on/off floor switch.

Swedish architect and designer Greta Magnusson Grossman broke through gender barriers to embark on a prolific career. In 1940, she and her husband immigrated to the United States, where her approach to Swedish modernism struck a chord with single, professional women who felt that she understood their needs and sensibilities. She opened a store on Rodeo Drive, where her furniture and accessories quickly drew the attention of clients such as Greta Garbo, Joan Fontaine and Gracie Allen. In the 1950s, she founded her architecture office and designed 14 homes – 13 in California and one in Sweden – each one a showcase for her quietly dramatic approach. The Grasshopper Lamp (1948) has a lithe frame and an elongated conical shade that rotates to direct light where needed. • Louis Poulsen PH 80 Floor Lamp
    shophorne.com
The iconic three shade system of the PH series of lighting fixtures was created in 1925/1926 by Poul Henningsen for an exhibition in Paris. The designer was determined to produce glare free lighting that was directed where it was needed most while creating soft shadows. The three shade system creates an even distribution of light as each shade reduces the light equally due to their distance from the light source. This is the first lamp to have been created using the scientific model of the logarithmic spiral as a basis for light distribution. There have been approximately one thousand variations of the original lamp with several floor, table, wall, and pendant versions currently available. The PH 80 Floor Lamp was put into production on what was to be Poul Hennigsen’s 80th birthday. Henningsen was fascinated with the new world of plastics so the PH 80 is constructed of Acrylic. This makes for a less expensive product without compromising light quality. It has a 9 foot electrical cord with an inline foot switch and accepts a 100W max E26 base bulb (not included)

Rather than develop his career within a single design discipline – be it industrial, furniture, interior, lighting or architectural design – Michele De Lucchi chose to move freely among them all, creating door pulls for Valli Colombo, laptops for Olivetti and tape dispensers for Pelikan while designing banks in Germany and apartment buildings in Japan. His Tolomeo Lamp (1987), designed in collaboration with Artemide’s R&D department head Giancarlo Fassina, was honored with the Compasso d’Oro Award in 1989, earning worldwide recognition for its perfect marriage of design and engineering. Since then, the Tolomeo Collection has grown to include an assortment of sizes and styles, including the Mega Floor Lamp launched in 2002. The Tolomeo Lamp begins with a heavy base and ends with a pivoting shade. • Serge Mouille Three-Arm Floor Lamp
    dwr.com
Serge Mouille designed his angular, insect-like lights as "a reaction to the Italian models that were beginning to invade the market in 1950," which he criticized for being "too complicated." His large-scale Three-Arm Floor Lamp (1952) has a kinetic, sculptural aesthetic that evokes a sense of movement in space. All of the arms can be rotated in various directions, allowing for ample, well-directed lighting for any task. Mouille designed the Three-Arm Lamp for a client whose instructions were simply, "I want a big light because I have clients in South America who have huge rooms." All of his lighting solutions feature Mouille's hallmark signatures as a designer: the way the arms are joined to the diffusers, the washer and six-sided screw hardware, the form of the reflectors, and the refined lines of the steel tubing. Bulb (not included): 75W/E26. Made in France. Three arms can be adjusted in any direction. Shades are produced using the original molds, proportions, and techniques. Each lamp is stamped and numbered.
