For the tube clock, Piet Hein Eek’s starting point was a tube and an extrusion ring. Extrusion molding is a design technique involving forcing aluminum, or paste for example, through a mold. The extrusion profile is what gives the material its shape. Piet devised a ring like that for the design of the clock face. Often, a good idea can be surprisingly simple. The simplest solutions have not yet been invented. This clock could have been designed a century ago.
