First designed in 1947, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp Collection has stood the test of time. The simple structural shapes with the innovative use of taut plastic over fine steel wire were born from George Nelson's frustration to buy a Swedish-made silk lamp which produced a soft light. This unique use of shape and material produces a diffused light that is free of glare while offering an abundance of illumination. These pieces are part of the permanent collection in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and remain icons in modern lighting. Modernica discovered these designs and reintroduced the series in 1989 with a dedication to reproducing these stunning, classic lights with authenticity and craftsmanship. Modernica still uses the same materials and methods to hand craft each piece in their Michigan facility. The classic Saucer Pendant is available in 4 sizes, with 6 feet of cord (extra large comes with 9 feet) and a 5.25 inch brushed nickel ceiling plate.

Architect George Nelson, who was Herman Miller’s design director from 1946 to 1972, said: “Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair.” And then he blew the doors off lighting design. When Nelson was outfitting his office, he coveted a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp but found it prohibitively expensive. He then recalled seeing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being mothballed “by having the decks covered with netting and then being sprayed with a self-webbing plastic,” said Nelson. “And then, Whammo!” Inspiration struck, and by the next night, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1947), using a spray coating of translucent plastic polymer over a skeleton of steel wire. “When you put a light in it, it glowed.” A wide range of shapes and sizes are now available. UL Listed. Bulb (not included): incandescent 150W/120V/E26/A21 max. Made in U.S.A. • Wastberg W151S1 Extra Large Pendant - Tall
    shophorne.com
Lamp fixtures have historically been shaped to encase different light sources such as the light bulb. Because of the physical shape and size of the light source the light fixture itself became of significant size. Today, thanks to LED, the almost zero-sized light source does no longer limit the size and shape of the light fixture. Consequently, minimizing has become the design rule. However, with pendants in particular, the light fixture has always had an additional role apart from providing light – it shapes the room. The lamp that hangs from the ceiling, often above a table, creates a room within the room. In w151 Extra Large Pendant we’re bringing back the room-shaping quality - not with one lamp, but three. Based on the most basic of geometrical shapes – the cone – the lamp comes in three variations: the tall and narrow, the archetypical and the low and wide. All three are super-sized, pushing the limits of manufactured, spun aluminum, yet fitting through a normal door frame. The feature of this lamp is its size. Paired with careful control of the fine details and the paper-like matt finishes, the lamp is almost illusory; dream- like – when experienced in reality. Technical Information: Light source: 19 W LED Light source included Colour temperature: 3000K CRI: > 80.
