    hivemodern.com
Design Eero Aarnio, 1963. Fiberglass shell, upholstery. Made in Finland by Adelta. The Ball Chair was designed by using one of the most simple geometric forms: the ball. By lopping off one end and fixing it at one point Eero Aarnio comes to a remarkable result - a supremely unconventional chair. A Ball Chair is a 'room within a room' with a cozy and calm atmosphere, protected from outside noises it provides a private space for relaxing or a phone call. Spinning on its own axis the view to the outer world is variable for the user and offers a degree of privacy. The ball chair is something between a piece of furniture and a piece of architecture and at the same time embodies both the mobile and the established. 47" h | 39" d | 41" w.

  • Arne Jacobsen Swan Chair in Milani Fabric
    dwr.com
Before the Swan Chair (1958), Arne Jacobsen's architecture and designs were shaped by an assumption of' natural ways of resisting. In other words, he could make them go only so far in becoming the structures he desired. With new technologies, however, the old rules no longer applied, and he was able to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. The Swan Chair is now made from polyurethane foam, but at the time, Jacobsen used Styropore® to create its continuous shape. Designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, for which Jacobsen was the architect, the chair permitted guests to spin on its swivel base, thus becoming active participants in the busy hotel atmosphere. A single upholsterer hand-sews the fabric onto the frame of Swan. Original design and licensed manufacture by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland.

  • Saarinen Knoll Executive Swivel Side Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Eero Saarinen, 1957. Five-star steel base. Polyurethane shell, upholstery. Made in USA by Knoll. In his groundbreaking collection of 1957, Eero Saarinen transformed executive seating into a fluid, sculptural form. Recognizing the importance of user comfort, Saarinen became the first to construct a chair shell from fiberglass, a pliable material that flexes in response to body weight. The chair is available with and without arms, and features metal or wood legs, or a swivel base. The armless chair with a plastic back, ideal for café applicatons, is a recent reintroduction. Son of the celebrated architect Eliel Saarinen, Eero was classically trained in sculpture and architecture. His collaboration with Charles Eames in 1937 led to the creation of the Organic Armchair, made from plywood and foam rubber, the first three-dimensionally shaped bucket armchair. Saarinen continued to develop this theme in the years that followed with great designs, all for Knoll. Among the many buildings for which he is known are Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., and the TWA terminal at Kennedy International Airport in New York.
