The wonderfully simple oak wood CH46 and CH47 dining chairs were designed by the celebrated architect and product designer, Hans J Wegner in 1965. Made from solid oak with a hand-woven paper cord seat, the design uses timbers, sourced from responsible sawmills in Wegner’s native Denmark. Wegner was one of the most prolific designers of the 20th century, having created over 500 different chairs over the course of his career. He began work as a cabinetmaker, providing him with a profound respect for the properties and beauty of wood, as well as exacting joinery techniques. A master craftsman, he joined Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller, designing furniture pieces for the new city hall in Århus in 1940, the same year in which he began collaborating with Holger Hasen, whose company, Carl Hansen & Son continue to produce Wegner’s classic chairs, including the CH46 and the iconic Wishbone Chair. • Cross Check Armchair By Knoll
    2modern.com
Inspired by the surprising strength of the apple crates he had played on as a child, Frank Gehry created this thoroughly original collection of bentwood chair and table designs. Gehry's architecture draws its strength from the sculptural approach with which he has expanded the vocabulary of buildings. Bringing this same approach to furniture, Gehry constructed the entire collection with interwoven strips of maple. The ribbon-like designs transcend the conventions of style by focusing, as the great modernists did, on the essential challenge of deriving form from function. Features: Designed by Frank Gehry, 1990. Materials: Constructed of hard white maple veneer strips, laminated 6 to 9 thick with high-bonding urea glue. Thermo-set assembly glue provides structural rigidity without the need for metal connectors. Clear plastic glides with matte frost finish included. Chair back flexes for added comfort. To maximize tension compression, limited assembly glue is used in woven seat: weaves flex in unison for spring-like comfort. The underside of each piece is embossed with the Knoll logo and Frank Gehry’s signature. 1" thick high resiliency foam, fish-shaped seat cushion Available in a range of KnollTextiles and Spinneybeck leathers. • Hans J. Wegner Ladderback Chair
    dwr.com
Hans Wegner’s Ladderback Chair (1966), with its fine joinery and exquisite form, demonstrates the Danish modern innovator’s roots as a cabinetmaker. Shaker-inspired, it features visible joints between the foreleg and the armrest, which help make the chair extremely strong. The hand-woven paper cord seat provides a compelling material contrast to the solid oak frame on this intuitively ergonomic chair that can be used for reading or as a statement piece. A fine example of Wegner’s trademark organic functionalism, the Ladderback combines the warmth of natural wood with the clean, minimal lines of midcentury modernism. One of Wegner’s more than 400 chair creations, it has a timeless shape that hasn’t aged a bit since its conception in 1966. Made in Denmark.

  • Eero Saarinen Saarinen Executive Side Chair with Metal Legs in Leather
    dwr.com
The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Side Chair (1946) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at the MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men; for Saarinen, most notably in his Womb, Tulip and Executive chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter and the contoured plywood seat supported by metal or wood legs. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair. This chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified; for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A.

  • CH25 Low Armchair
    conranshop.co.uk
One of the earliest models by Danish designer Hans J. Wegner, the CH25 low armchair was constructed in 1950 and is now considered a classic example of mid-century modern design. The armchair is hand-woven using a distinctive pattern that requires more than 400 metres of paper cord. It takes a trained craftsman 8-10 hours to complete a single chair. With such delicacy, care and attention to detail going into each individual model, the CH25 is a tribute to traditional craftsmanship, and its light, natural appearance means it handsomely complements a variety of interior styles. An ideal chair to sit and while away the time, on a lazy afternoon, its low reclining back makes this the ultimate choice for relaxation. Home life - Carl Hansen & Søn from Monocle on Vimeo.
