  • herman miller Noguchi Table
    shopgrounded.com
    herman miller Noguchi Table
Isamu Noguchi believed that sculpture should be incorporated into everyday living. His furniture designs are the perfect reflection of this belief...they're sculptural, beautiful and useful. His classic coffee table was designed in 1944 to illustrate an article by George Nelson entitled "How to Make a Table." The table base is made of two identical solid wood elements set at a right angle with a freeform glass top. The ethereal result does not diminish the practical design - a sturdy and durable table. This marriage of sculptural form and everyday function has made the Noguchi table an understated and beautiful element in homes and offices since its introduction in 1948. To ensure authenticity, the signature of Isamu Noguchi appears on the longest edge of the glass top and on a medallion on the underside of the base. Under the medallion, his initials are stamped into the base. Noguchi's coffee table consists of three pieces. A freeform, 3/4" plate-glass top resting on two curved, solid wood legs that interlock to form a tripod for self-stabilizing support. Available in your choice of three finish options. Dimensions: 50"w, 36"d, 15.75"h.

herman miller Nelson Swag Leg Work Table
The classic Nelson swag leg table has a clean, simple look that's a fresh today as when George Nelson designed it 50 years ago. The rectangular work table has solid walnut stretcher with either a walnut veneer top or white laminate top with a walnut edge. The chromed legs feature adjustable glides. George Nelson began with the legs, insisting that they be made of metal, machine formed, and prefinished. And beautiful. He wanted that graceful curve. He also wanted them to be easy for the consumer to assemble, so the desk and tables could be shipped knocked down to save on costs. This series of furniture is named for the process that creates the distinctive legs. George Nelson started with this idea: "Wouldn't it be beautiful to have some kind of sculptured leg on a piece of furniture?" How could that be done without wood and hand-carving tools? Using pressure to taper and curve a metal tube--the process called swaging--proved to be the best way to produce the legs. Dimensions: 54"l | 36"w | 29.38"h.

herman miller Eames Molded Plywood Coffee Table
The Eames molded plywood coffee table was designed by Charles and Ray Eames using the same breakthrough technology that resulted in their famous molded plywood chairs. Designed in the mid-1940s, the molded plywood table features a thin, slightly indented top and gently curved legs. The table is shaped by the Eameses' process of sandwiching thin wood veneers under heat and pressure. The table top is made by pressing three strong, lightweight hardwood inner plies between natural face veneers. The legs are eight-ply with natural face veneers. The resulting simple, lightweight design speaks eloquently of the fertile early years of classic Eames design. In 1945, George Nelson, the Herman Miller design director, saw the molded plywood coffee table and other ground-breaking Eames molded plywood pieces at a showing at the Barclay Hotel in New York. Nelson was so impressed that he told company president D.J. De Pree that Herman Miller had to hire the Eameses. De Pree demurred-the company was still very small at the time and he wasn't convinced that it needed any designer other than Nelson. But finally he succumbed and went to see the Eames molded plywood pieces when they were shown at the Museum of Modern Art. Nelson contacted the Eameses, and soon afterward, Charles and Ray were designing for Herman Miller. The table went into production in 1946. Dimensions: 34" dia. | 15.5" H.

It's a large, dramatic stage for fine art, fresh flowers, magazines or special books on display in a living room, waiting room, or executive lounge. Charles and Ray Eames spent many years experimenting with wire rods, work that yielded a number of breakthrough products in the 1950s — including the wire-rod base for this table as well as many other products. The Eameses considered many shapes for this large table but their final choice was elliptical. It reminds some of a surfboard. That's fitting, given that the Eameses enjoyed commanding views of the Pacific Ocean from their California home and studio. The 89" long table provides lots of room to spread out or display a variety of items. The tabletop is made from seven layers of Baltic birch plywood sandwiched between Black, Studio White or White high-pressure laminate with a beveled edge on a 20° angle to reveal the plies. The wire rod base is chrome plated or powder coated Black, Studio White or White.

Are they really stools? Places to sit? Are they tables? Plant stands? Accent pieces for homes, offices, lobbies? Yes. They've been called abstract chess pieces. Well, no. Made of solid walnut, these stools designed by Charles and Ray Eames can be used anywhere, alone or in groups, and are beautifully versatile. The center section of the Eames walnut stool is done in three distinctively shaped profiles. Choose the one you like, or choose two or three - the same or different. Each stool is made of turned walnut; pick it up - you can tell instantly that it's solid wood. You can turn the stools over. Both surfaces are concave. At the time it was built in 1959, the Time-Life Building was the largest slab-formed skyscraper in New York. It was a modern marvel, featuring an ultra-modern lobby with murals by Joseph Albers and Fritz Glarner. In 1960, Ray Eames was asked to design occasional pieces for that lobby to accompany chairs designed by her husband, Charles. Trained as a sculptor, Eames created the walnut stools, which became her favorite seats and were scattered all over the Pacific Palisades home she shared with Charles. Dimensions: 15"h, top diameter 13", bottom diameter 11" Made in the USA by Herman Miller.

Colorful cubbyholes at the back keep materials organized and at hand with one slot sized to fit a laptop computer. This contemporary classic desk is open and freeing of space without losing the structural integrity common to desks. The process of "swaging" (using pressure to taper and curve metal) proved the best way to produce the legs, which are 16-gauge steel and have adjustable glides. Nelson added solid walnut stretchers that bolt to the legs for a stable, durable base. Available in a White Laminate or Walnut Veneer top with solid walnut stretcher. The Nelson Swag Leg Desk is a revival from an historic collection by George Nelson. Introduced in 1958, the group's evocative chairs, tables, and desks have a look, scale, and function that are right for today.

herman miller Eames Molded Plywood Side Chair With Dowel Base

Borne out of Charles' and Eero Saarinen's early investigations molding plywood at Cranbrook Academy in 1939, and continued with Ray at the Eames studio in Venice, California, the Molded Wood Side Chair realizes the Eameses' decades-long effort to make a single-form wood shell chair. Herman Miller Eames&Reg; Desk Unit 20
Design by Charles & Ray Eames, 1950.By Herman Miller. Introduced in 1950, well before its time, the Eames Desk Unit 20 is emblematic of the grace and vision Charles and Ray Eames used in solving home furnishing problems. A result of work they had done for a 1949 exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Eames Desk Units and Storage Units reveal the "machine aesthetic" and Japanese influences important to the Eameses at the time. Long before "modularity" and "high tech" entered the language, Charles and Ray combined standardized parts in many ways to create practical furnishings that suit a variety of uses at home and the office. The wire cross supports used in Eames Desk Units echo other classic Eames designs, including Eames Storage Units, wire chairs, and wire-base tables. The Eames Desk Unit 20 features a birch finish on tops and file fronts with painted hardwood board in neutral or primary colors on case sides and back panels. The desk is also offered in the scaled down Desk Unit 10, featuring open shelf storage and a smaller overall footprint. Select Left- or Right-facing file drawer.
