Now and then. Known for their eclectic mix of modern and vintage, TV's famed husband-and-wife design duo Robert and Cortney Novogratz have a style all their own. And as parents to the seven Novogratz kids ages 3 to 15, it's a style that's easy to live with. Created exclusively for CB2, the Stick Around Chair was inspired by the Novogratzes' own dining chairs, which are authentic vintage finds: "We wanted to design a chair that was a modern take on a familiar, vintage design and form that could go in any home. The neutral color palette we chose works with pretty much any style, from super traditional to super modern, and everything in between. Robert and I love color, but you also need great pieces that stand as the foundation for your color expression." With its graceful curves and cabriole legs, the Stick Around Chair nods to Queen Anne-style—but with a modern twist. Fresh white-on-white design highlights the pure form, framed in hi-gloss birch with a faux leather seat and back. Learn about Robert and Cortney Novogratz on our blog. • Charles and Ray Eames Eames® Wire Chair with Bikini Pad (DKR.2)
    dwr.com
After refining their molded plastic chairs, Charles and Ray Eames began experimenting with making a chair from welded wire. To succeed, the Eameses had to figure out how to create a design with the strength they needed while keeping manufacturing costs as low as possible. Ultimately, they decided on using lighter-gauge wire doubled over into a rim that sandwiches heavier inner wire to form their Eames Wire Chair (1951), which won them their first American mechanical design patent. Its organic shape and airy silhouette are complemented by what’s commonly referred to as an Eiffel base (because of its trademark shape). This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Commercial quality. Made in U.S.A. DKR.2 stands for dining height, wire shell, rod base, bikini pad.

  • Ettore Sottsass Nine-0 Swivel Armchair
    dwr.com
Presenting the Nine-0 Collection by Ettore Sottsass. The designer, who helped found the Memphis Group and created the iconic Olivetti Valentine typewriter, finished his seating collection for Emeco shortly before his death on December 31, 2007. The name “Nine-0” refers to the age Sottsass was when he designed the collection, which is handcrafted in Pennsylvania using the same 77-step process that Emeco first developed for its 1006 Navy® Chair. Sottsass was one of the first designers to use the 1006 Navy in residential applications, and the Nine-0 is his reinterpretation of that classic chair. • Michael Thonet Era Chair with Cane Seat
    dwr.com
Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple, organic form, the graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong Era Chair with Cane (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the back of the chair and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet, who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making, eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. The Era Chair with Cane is suitable for residential and commercial use and remains a staple in cafes and restaurants around the globe. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Made in the Czech Republic.
  • Niels Otto Møller Møller Model 71 Side Chair with Natural Woven Seat
    dwr.com
In 1944, Niels Otto Møller began his cabinetry company, where old craft traditions, like the hand-woven seat on the Model 71 Side Chair (1951), are still used today. Danish cord seats are known for their durability – easily withstanding decades of frequent use – and the strength of this material made it a smart substitute for tires when rubber was in short supply during WWII. What’s amazing about that history is that Danish cord is made of tightly twisted paper. Being a natural material, Danish cord is very pleasant to sit on and the way that it’s woven provides lasting comfort. Thirty years after he founded his company, Niels Otto Møller began exporting his chairs to Japan, which remains one of its biggest markets due to the simplicity and quality of the design and craftsmanship. Møllers is still a small family-owned business and is now managaged by Niels’ son, Jørgen Henrik Møller. These chairs are authentic, fully licensed products of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. Made in Denmark. The seat is woven by hand from one continuous 425-foot-long piece of cord. To make the frames, the company selects the raw wood themselves from environmentally friendly areas. Machines are never used for the final polish, as these devices treat all wood the same and can’t replicate the finish that comes from polishing by hand.

  • Norman Cherner Cherner® Side Chair
    dwr.com
Although a pioneer in prefab housing, Norman Cherner is best known for his molded plywood seating line he created for – and ultimately sued – the manufacturer, Plycraft. After telling Cherner that his design for what is now known as the Cherner® Chair (1958) had been scrapped, Plycraft’s owner continued to produce it, claiming himself as the designer. The Chair’s popularity soared when it appeared in Norman Rockwell’s 1961 painting “The Artist at Work” on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. Cherner sued, and while Plycraft agreed to pay Cherner royalties, the line was out of production by the early 1970s. In 1999, Cherner’s sons formed the Cherner Chair Company to revive the designs and produce them as their father originally intended. Made in U.S.A. This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Cherner Chair Company. Cherner Chair is a licensed trademark of Cherner Chair Company. Constructed of laminated plywood of graduating thicknesses, from 5 ply at the perimeter edge of the seat to 15 ply at the slender waist, the design possesses exceptional structural strength and dramatic sculptural beauty.

  • Josef Hoffmann Hoffmann Side Chair
    dwr.com
Josef Hoffmann is well known for the simple, restrained, yet visually interesting dining chairs – several intended for cafés – that he designed early in the 20th century. The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement can be seen in his work, but Hoffmann also embraced the industrial age. Rather than rejecting traditional decoration, he succeeded in making it serve structural principles, which he believed should determine the forms of buildings, interiors and objects. Whether admiring one of his chairs or the Sanatorium Purkersdorf he designed in 1903, you can see Hoffmann’s emphasis on straight, unadorned lines, characteristics that are in keeping with the style of the Viennese Secession. The Hoffmann Side Chair (1925), designed in collaboration with Josef Frank, is made at the bentwood factory founded by Michael Thonet in 1861. Made in the Czech Republic.
