Christian VII of Denmark married Caroline Mathilde, who was a princess of England when they were both young. But Christian VII was insane and the marriage was never truly happy. So Caroline Mathilde met the King's physician-in-ordinary Johann Friderich Struensee who was from the Danish dukedom located in Germany. They became lovers and since Struensee was the only one who could get through to the King (whom's trust he also enjoyed) and Struensee soon became the true ruler of Denmark - but only behind the scenes. When the affair was discovered Struensee was beheaded and Caroline Mathilde was sent to Germany in exile and never saw her children again.
