Boys Like Girls - Holiday
I lifted a hand and gently knocked on her door. I wonder how she’ll feel when she sees me. Angry? Happy? Surprised? Would she hug me or kill me? Yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the latter. I stared at the door waiting for it to open but there was no answer. I tried again, this time knocking a little harder. Still no answer. Couple more knocks later, and still no answer. Hmm. I guess she’s not home.
I started to back away from the door, half-disappointed that she wasn’t there and yet half-relieved that I won’t get the door slammed on my face. I was about to turn my back when the door swung open.
I stood there, my mouth slightly gaping. For a moment I forgot why I was there. I’ve only been away for a few months and I could swear that I never forgot her face. But I guess I forgot her effect on me. “Hey Snarky…. Surprise!”, I smiled, feebly adding some (lame) jazz hands.
“What the hell?! You’re here…” She didn’t sound like she was angry but she didn’t sound like she was entirely happy to see me either. I guess the jazz hands didn’t work.
“Yeah. The show is filming here in New York. We’re shooting the pilot next week. I’ll probably stay a couple weeks more to fix some stuff and then I’ll be back in LA.”
She crossed her arms and leaned on the door frame. “Have you found her yet?” She asked, sounding slightly indignant.
I shook my head in reply. She didn’t ask me anymore questions after that. We both just stood there, staring at each other. Not saying anything. Even though I know there was so much I wanted to say. Sh!t. This quiet is too much for me to bear.
“Okay.” I said with a sigh. “I’ve said my hi… I guess that’s it then. It was nice to see you.” I started to walk away from the door and from her.
“Hey you.” I turned around and looked at her.
“Do you want to come in? I mean I’ve got nothing offer you except vodka, Jager, and some Clorox. But I think that’s more than enough for me to poison you.”
I smiled. “Woman. Have you ever been to a supermarket? Seriously. They’ve got really good stuff there, you know, like…milk and…peanut butter…”
She forced a smile. “Rye…don’t worry about her. She’ll turn up soon.”
She sounded like she really meant it but I still don’t know what else to say that, so I just nodded.
“Hey, I’ve got a great idea. Instead of you killing me, why don’t I just take you out to do some grocery shopping?”
She smiled again. And this time I know it was for real.
5 minutes later we were out on the street, walking. It was slightly chilly today. The streets were damp, the skies were dark. But I could care less. I looked at Nadine as she slipped her hand to my arm. I was home.
“So…” Nadine said, gently squeezing my arm. “…did you get me anything from LA?”
“What? My gorgeous self isn’t enough for you?”
She stopped at her tracks after I said that. She glared at me, rolled her eyes and stormed back towards her apartment. I had to go run after her.
