  • Vitra Eames & Saarinen Organic Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Charles Eames & Eero Saarinen, 1940. Laminate seat shell, ash or oak legs, upholstery. Made in Germany by Vitra. For the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition held by the Museum of Modern Art, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen created an entire series of versions of the Organic chair, each intended for a different sitting position. The designs were ahead of their time, but never went into production owing to a lack of technology. Not until after 1950 was it possible to produce (and sell) larger numbers of organically molded seat shells, such as the Eames' famous Plastic Armchair or Saarinen's Tulip chair. While the Organic chair is a comfortable small reading armchair, the Organic Highback has a higher backrest and neck support. In addition, the armrests and seat area are broader and longer. Available in an assortment of vibrantly colored fabrics. Black stained ash or natural oak legs. Low back: 32.5" h | 26.5" d | 28.5" w | seat: 13.75" h | 22.25" d. high back: 42.25" h | 31" d | 33.5" w.

Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen created a comfortable chair with their Organic Chair in 1940, which was one step ahead in its time: The piece of furniture is still highly current today. The Organic Chair: A comfortable small reading armchair – emerged in 1940 as contribution for the competition “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” by the Museum of Modern Arts in New York. The cooperation of both design legends Eames and Saarinen was successful: Formally the different variants of the Organic Chair went one step ahead in their time. The armchair however, couldn’t be produced in series, because of a lack of production techniques. Only after 1950 it was possible to produce organic shaped seats and distribute in larger amounts, this is how also Charles and Ray Eames’ famous Plastic Armchair and Saarinen’s Tulip Chair were finally distributed. The Organic Chair is also available as Organic Highback armchair, with a higher backrest and larger and wider armrests. The Organic Conference edition is suitable to be used at tables. Moreover there are different fabrics for it selectable.

  • Knoll Saarinen Black Tulip Arm Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Eero Saarinen, 1956. Aluminum base, fiberglass, upholstery. Made in USA by Knoll. In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. He designed the 1956 Tulip chair in terms of its setting, rather than a particular shape. "In any design problem, one should seek the solution in terms of the next largest thing." he said. "If the problem is a chair, then its solution must be found in the way it relates to the room..." In Tulip Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award, the Tulip is Saarinen's genius solution to clearing up the "slum of legs" that populates the under-carriage of most dining sets. Construction notes: Base is a cast aluminum, rilsan coated finish. Shell is molded fiberglass with a reinforced plastic bonded finish. Upholstered foam cushion is removable, with zippered cover and Velcro fastening. Finishes; Base and shell finishes available in White or Black. Upholstery; available with a seat cushion only or with a fully upholstered inner shell. 26" w | 23.25" d | 32" h | seat: 18" h | arm: 25.4" h.
